TOYOTA INTRODUCES RALLY VERSION OF CELICA GT-FOUR
Toyota City―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION has launched a rally version of its four-wheel drive Celica GT-Four. Dubbed the Celica GT-Four RC (Rally Competition), the new vehicle is the homologation-base for Toyota's future Group A rally car.
Designed to handle the world's most punishing roads, the new Celica GT-Four RC will compete in next year's World Rally Championships (WRC), scheduled for 1992. Improved engine cooling, plus added power and durability have bolstered the car's rally-driving performance, while retaining the Celica's style and sportiness.

The cooling system is crucial in supporting the enormous loads placed on an engine under grueling rally-driving conditions. The Celica GT-Four RC uses a water-based intercooler system instead of an air-based one. An air-outlet bulge and timing-belt cooling duct are employed in the hood, and a larger air intake in the specially designed colored bumper insures maximum cooling efficiency.
To improve heat dissipation in the valve area next to the valve seat, the engine cylinder head uses the world's first laser-clad seat. Welded by laser beam, the one-piece structure allows heat to dissipate more evenly.
In the area of performance, various design improvements―for example in the exhaust system, where back-pressure has been reduced―have helped boost the 2-liter turbo-charged engine's maximum output by 10hp to 235hp and give the GT-Four RC a spirited, racing car-like exhaust note. To improve durability, Toyota has also switched from ceramic to metal turbocharger turbines.
A sporty leather-covered steering wheel by MOMO of Italy comes as standard equipment, giving the car an extra touch of style.
About 5,000 Celica GT-Four RCs will be sold worldwide, with 1,800 to be sold at Corolla dealers nationwide starting today.
This year's WRC consists of 13 races worldwide; the eighth race ended in Australia on September 14. So far, the GT-Four RC's predecessor, the Celica GT-Four, is running a close second in manufacturer's points, with driver Carlos Sainz leading in the drivers' competition.
