Japan is entering a super-aging society, with older adults accounting for 29% of the population in 2020 and half of all households including someone aged 65 or over. As life expectancy continues to rise toward 100 years, Toyota has been considering how we can help people stay active and healthy throughout their lives. Because going out more often helps prevent mobility decline and dementia, Toyota has been providing welfare vehicles in the hope of offering even a small measure of support for people with mobility challenges―and giving them more opportunities to get out and about.

In addition, our ITSUDEMO Welcab, launched in 2022, offers products that can be retrofitted to your current vehicle, such as a seat that turns and tilts to make getting in and out easier, and an electric lift that raises and lowers heavy wheelchairs for convenient storage. This allows you to continue using your current car, reducing the financial burden of buying a new one, while the products can be installed quickly whenever needed. Toyota is providing products that better suit our customers' needs more than ever before.

One-touch Wheelchair Lock

One-touch Wheelchair Lock
One-touch Wheelchair Lock

With the single press of a switch, anyone can easily and safely lock a wheelchair into place on their mobility vehicle.

Starting with shuttle vehicles that transport wheelchair users at daycare facilities, we plan to expand this technology to buses, boats, aircraft, and other forms of mobility―aiming to deliver stress-free freedom of movement to wheelchair users.

In collaboration with wheelchair, automobile, and bus manufacturers, we have established the Wheelchair Easy-fix System Consortium to advance this initiative on a nationwide scale.

JUU Under development

JUU

This mobility device can travel over uneven surfaces, including steps and bumps.

By expanding the freedom of movement for wheelchair users, we aim to create a world where they can go anywhere―freely, independently, and whenever they wish. A world where they can do what was once impossible and see sights they could never see before―bringing the joy of mobility and producing happiness for all.

Its stylish, appealing design―one that makes people think "That looks cool. I'd like to try it."―is another key feature.

Mobile Toilet (Mobile universal toilet trailer)

Mobile Toilet (Mobile universal toilet trailer)

"I wish a toilet could come to the places I want to go."
That heartfelt wish from wheelchair users inspired the creation of the mobile toilet.

To bring peace of mind to everyone―whether in daily life or during emergencies―we developed universal toilets that can be towed with a standard driver's license.

From now on, clean, accessible toilets will travel to where people want to go―bringing comfort wherever it's needed.

Driving for All: Creating a New Society Through Remote Driving Under development

Driving for All: Creating a New Society Through Remote Driving

The remote driving system enables mobility vehicles to be operated freely from a distance. It enables drivers to control a vehicle from the comfort of their home or office. In cases where the driver in the vehicle becomes unable to continue driving due to a health issue, or when automated driving is interrupted, a remote driver can quickly take over control. We will continue striving to meet the evolving driving needs of a rapidly changing transportation society.

As demand for mobility continues to grow, the shortage of drivers has become a serious issue across a wide range of areas―from autonomous bus and truck operations to chauffeur and substitute-driver services. In response, we have developed a remote driving system that wirelessly links a remote cockpit with mobility vehicles. This system enables remote drivers to promptly provide driving services wherever they are needed.

Moreover, since the remote cockpit is not physically connected to the vehicle, operation design can be customized to suit the physical conditions of the driver. This makes it possible to create an environment in which anyone can operate a mobility vehicle, regardless of physical limitations or disabilities.

In addition, Toyota has developed a new control system that allows people with lower-body disabilities to drive with minimal effort. By simply applying force in the desired direction, remote driving has become possible―even achieving racetrack performance. Together with our remote-driving system, we will continue building a new society where everyone can enjoy the freedom of driving.

Buggy: Mobility Support for Children Requiring Medical Care Under development

Buggy: Mobility Support for Children Requiring Medical Care

Mobility for All Children / People Requiring Medical Care

Moving about for a family with children or other members needing medical care is no easy task. Suction machines, ventilators, oxygen tanks, humidifiers, power supplies... In addition to traveling with all this equipment, medical care is often needed unpredictably―even during car journeys.

We are developing a buggy for children requiring medical care that offers safety and peace of mind when traveling by car.

Home-Connected Mobility Architecture Under development

Home-Connected Mobility Architecture
Home-Connected Mobility Architecture

This project is being developing from the desire to provide mobility for all so that those who find walking difficult, whether using wheelchairs or walking assistance such as canes or walkers, can go out more freely.

Even when steps at entrances or porches are removed using conventional welfare devices or home renovations, there are still long slopes to manage, and it is still hard to board the vehicle after reaching it. This often leaves the person physically exhausted, and as they also want to avoid burdening their caregivers, in the end, they often end up just not going out as much.

By eliminating both height differences and distances between the living space and the mobility vehicle, and combining this with optional features such as a retractable roof, the design enables easier and more comfortable boarding than ever before, providing greater freedom of movement for users who use wheelchairs or walking aids.

NUKUMARU

NUKUMARU

The NUKUMARU mobile mist sauna is a new mobility service that combines bathing with MaaS (Mobility as a Service). Built on the Hiace platform, the vehicle houses a mist sauna that provides a comfortable steam bath environment between approximately 38°C and 45°C.

Its greatest feature is mobility―it can be used anywhere, independent of location or facilities. This new style of bathing, the mobile mist sauna, is offered to a wide range of users, from preventive care to leisure.

Unlike soaking in a bathtub, it places less strain on the body and causes less shortness of breath, allowing older adults and those who are not fond of traditional saunas to enjoy it comfortably and with peace of mind. The vehicle is also equipped with a rest area, changing space, and hair-washing shower, allowing all activities to be completed in a single private room for maximum comfort and privacy.

As it requires only about two liters of water per person, it can be operated easily. It can also help alleviate water shortages and improve sanitary conditions at evacuation shelters during water outages caused by disasters.

It also helps support both physical and mental well-being by warming people from the core, even in times of disaster when stress and anxiety run high.

Kinetic Seat

Designed with a focus on human anatomy, the seat enhances body stability through movement. It moves to better support the body and reduce vibration, allowing even those with weaker core muscles to feel more secure when driving on curves or uneven roads.

We want to change the future of people and cars through the evolution of seats.

Driven by this aspiration, Toyota is developing the Kinetic Seat to make mobility easier and more enjoyable for everyone. The seat is designed not only for wheelchair users, but also for those who tire from long hours of driving, older adults, and anyone who lacks confidence behind the wheel―all in the spirit of Your Journey. Our Mission.

Tsugi-Koko Under development

Tsugi-Koko

Building a society where people can keep going out, no matter their age.

We are developing the Tsugi-Koko, a watch-style walking navigation device designed to help older adults who no longer drive and people with dementia enjoy walking safely and confidently.

There are over 10 million people in Japan living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and many refrain from going out due to concerns about getting lost.

To address this challenge, Tsugi-Koko aims to be a walking navigation device that can be intuitively operated and easily understood, even by those who are not comfortable with digital technology.

During development, we invited more than 50 individuals with lived experience to try the device and continuously refined it based on their feedback.

Our goal is not only to ease anxiety, but also to encourage people to go out more often and support their physical and mental well-being.

Tsugi-Koko will always be there to support your "I want to go!" moments.
