Toyota Exhibits Image of Future Mobility Society at China International Import Expo 2018

SHANGHAI, November 5, 2018―Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Group Companies (Toyota) announce their participation in the first China International Import Expo, an all-new event that will be held at the Shanghai National Exhibition and Convention Center from November 5-10. With the aim of contributing to China's future automobile society with emphasis on "Electrification, Intelligence, and Connectivity", Toyota will exhibit its booth under the theme of "The future city in your hand". Within the booth, various solutions will be showcased divided among three zones: "Living", "Hydrogen society/technology" and "Coexistence with nature" to provide solutions for issues related to the "Environment", "Transportation" and an "Aging society" in China.

Toyota is transforming to a mobility company: Proposal for a future mobility society

President Akio Toyoda has stated, "We want to provide safe and free movement to all." He has also said "We want to offer [people] the enjoyment of driving a car."

Toyota is committed to transcending its position as an automobile manufacturer and transforming into a mobility company to deliver mobile services to its customers based on the philosophy of "just-in-time", the essence of its Toyota Production System.

Furthermore, the ideal Toyota connected services should not be IT or AI dominated. Instead, Toyota puts emphasis on humanized services, such as a high-quality operator service that is close to the customer's feelings, or a service that includes helping dealer staff keep an eye on a customer's vehicle information, and additional support services that might include provide advice on vehicle maintenance matters or even the ability to make an appointment with a service shop from the vehicle. Essentially, Toyota's vision of connected services centers on the fusion of advanced intelligent technology and human beings to provide ever better customer care.

Currently in China it is important to deal with issues related to the "Environment", "Transportation" and an "Aging society" in "全面建成小康社会的决胜阶段 (The decisive stage in finishing the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects)". Visitors to the Toyota booth will see an image of society that include a realization of "绿水青山就是金山银山(Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets: Environmental response is a prerequisite of social development and economic growth)" as well as images of the utilization of clean energy that is CO2 emission-free in the future IoT society, and agricultural activities utilizing the Toyota Production System, etc. Aiming to help solve the challenges of China together with the Chinese people, Toyota will also exhibit a variety of solutions through three zones: "Living", "Hydrogen society/technology", and "Coexistence with nature". Based on these, Toyota proposes a vision of a future mobility society.

As for "Living" and "Coexistence with nature", Toyota will support various business and social scenes by focusing on the shared mobile platform "e-Palette" which makes full use of connected and autonomous driving technology based on a customer's service needs. Toyota plans to provide support various business scenes such as ride sharing, car sharing, transportation and sales services, etc. The platform is not just for moving humans and goods but it will make it possible to revolutionize our way of thinking, bringing retail outlets to customers, instead of requiring customers to go to a retail outlet to buy goods. These mobile shops and public services, etc., can come to customers in vehicles using autonomous driving. Toyota, by proposing this vision of a society in the near future, hopes to bring to pass a new form of mobility that changes the lives of people with "e-Palette".

Toyota will also be exhibiting fuel cell electric vehicles such as its FCEV "MIRAI" passenger car, the FC bus "SORA", the FC truck and an FC forklift as icons to demonstrate its "Hydrogen Society/Technology".

In addition, the company will also display an automated driving development vehicle based on a customized Lexus "LS 500h". Automated driving technology has the potential to solve issues such as "traffic accident casualties", "congestion" and "an aging society".

By exhibiting the latest FCEVs and the automated driving development vehicle, Toyota shows its proposal to contribute to a future society that is CO2-free, clean, and safe, in-line with the objectives outlined by the Chinese government.

At the Toyota booth, the aforementioned three themes will be exhibited based on images of a Chinese family (Wang family) life using images and panels designed with the intent to make it easier for visitors to understand (see example below).

When grandfather gets up in the morning, a "Human Support Robot (HSR)" brings coffee. While serving him, the "HSR" automatically scans the health condition of the grandfather, and that information is conveyed digitally to the family and his doctor/hospital. After reviewing the data, his doctor sends a rehabilitation menu tailored to his condition, and dispatches a "Welwalk" rehabilitation robot to his home via "e-Palette". This is helpful for the grandfather whose lower extremities were paralyzed by a stroke etc., preventing his freedom of movement.

The system also reduces the burden on the person providing nursing care to the grandfather. Utilizing the time while the grandfather is in rehabilitation, grandmother calls a separate "e-Palette" for beauty services to be delivered to their home, allowing receive a haircut while being able to see the grandfather undergoing his rehabilitation.

Anticipating a large crowd gathering for an event, a mother is resting comfortably in a "e-Bench", a mobile service device that is not only a resting place, but also functions as a city's IT infrastructure hub, with services such as high-speed Wi-Fi communication or acting as a contactless charging station for mobile devices etc. Then there is "e-Pal", a device designed to flexibly support a variety of activities in daily life, such as providing transportation for people or freight, as well as providing a function to watch over and remain in close contact with people, including watching over children.

Also, there is the "e-Round", which provides mobility specializing in roaming the city. It will make the enjoyment of a stroll in the city more efficient and further expand the possibilities.

When father commutes to work, he opts to use "e-Calm 02", a one-seater shared mobility vehicle. He finds relief from the hassle in the private space the vehicle provides and enjoys stress-free travel and in-car entertainment. Later, he travels from his office in the suburbs to the bus terminal on the FC Bus "SORA", then changes again to an "e-Calm 02" where he is able to specify the optimum route, and he also appreciates the flexibility to select the type of space he wants: work, relax or jog.

"e-Chargeair" is a mobile charging platform to supporting various mobile devices. Using Toyota's fuel cell technology utilizing hydrogen, "e-Chargeair" can even charge while driving.

Also, "e-Calm 01" plays an active role for elderly people living in rural areas where mobility is limited. Doctors and hospitals can provide high-quality medical treatment and transmit the patient's health condition reports to both the hospitals and their families living in urban areas.

For dinner, mother can send a grocery list based on the planned menu directly to a local farmer or farmer's market, and receive freshly harvested vegetables at home using the "e-Palette" cold chain.

Toyota aims to not only reduce CO2 emissions and implement environmental measures by vehicle technology, but is also working along with its group companies in other initiatives such as afforestation, tree planting, and agriculture. Toyota's unique application of the Toyota Production System to agriculture supports efficient, safe and secure crop production. With new connectivity, Toyota aims for a prosperous and convenient society for everyone regardless whether they live in urban or rural areas.
