TOKYO―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today announced three automatic transmission (AT) models in the Vista and Camry series, the top-line small FWD Toyotas. Simultaneously, both were released for sale throughout Japan.

The four-speed AT with two-way overdrive on the new Vista and Camry models is the world's first transversely-mounted AT for FWD cars. It features a flat-shaped torque converter with lock-up clutch, four-speed gear train with overdrive, and other advanced Toyota developments in a ultra-light, ultra-compact package.

As a result, the Vista and Camry models, already renowned for their excellent fuel efficiency, road performance and quiet, comfortable ride, now have an even wider range of selections to suit the needs of today's motoring public.

Fuel efficiency values are truly impressive, with the new automatics turning in scores of 21.0 km/L over a set course at 60 km/h (maker notification values), ranking them in the upper echelon of 1.8-liter class AT passenger cars.

Major features of the new Vista and Camry AT models are as follows

  1. Engine

The same 1S-FF four-cylinder 1832 cc engine currently available in manual transmission Vista and Camry cars has been adopted in the AT versions. This advanced power-plant has a maximum power rating of 100 ps at 5,400 rpm and maximum torque of 15.5 kg-m at 3,400 rpm.

  2. Transmission
    • The four-speed AT with two-way overdrive was specifically designed for FWD use. Consisting of a flat-designed torque converter, new four-speed gear train with overdrive, new gear oil pump and other state-of-the-art components, this transmission is extremely compact and light.
    • The efficient torque converter and wider gear range provide major improvements in fuel efficiency, performance and quiet ride.
    • The combination of the 1S-FF engine and new AT with two-way overdrive offers finely tuned performance, which is even more impressive in view of the excellent fuel efficiency―10.8 km/L (Ministry of Transport 10-mode test values), and 21.0 km/L over a set course at 60 km/h (maker MOT notification values).
    • Considerations have also been made for convenience by locating the overdrive switch on the gearshift lever for easier reach.
  3. Specifications and Equipment Features

The new Vista and Camry AT models are available in the same specification and equipment grades as their manual transmission counterparts.

  4. Body Types

Both the Vista and Camry AT are available in three separate body types: the Vista 1800 AT in the VX, VE and VL, and the Camry 1800 in ZX, SE and XT versions.
