Toyota Adds Two-Liter Engines and 5-Door Liftback to FWD Vista2000 cc Powerplants Also Added to FWD Camry
TOKYO―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today announced the addition of 2000 cc 5-door liftback and 4-door sedan models, and an 1800 cc 5-door liftback to its small-size FWD Vista passenger car series, together with a 2000 cc 4-door sedan model for the Camry FWD series. All four models were released for sale throughout Japan.
- VISTA 5-door 1800 VL (E-SV10-UHMNS)
- CAMRY 2000 SE (E-SV11-JEMEE)
Equipped with the very latest examples of Toyota technological creativity, the Vista and Camry are FWD cars in fine tune with today's motoring needs. In the few short months since their March debut, they have been heaped with praise for their superb fuel economy, topflight road performance and roomy interiors.
The new two-liter models and 5-door liftback released for sale today carry on this fine tradition, but offer even more than their illustrious predecessors. In the two-liter models, for example, adoption of the newly developed 2S-FF engine has substantially enhanced road performance and luxury. The 5-door liftback offers outstanding aerodynamic styling and an interior with a rich array of features to create a sporty yet practical, multifunctional space.
A rundown of the major characteristics of the newly added Vista and Camry follows.
- Vista and Camry Two-Liter Models
- Newly Developed 2S-FF Engine
- An ultralight, compact, EFI (electronic fuel injection) equipped engine, the newly developed transversely mounted 2S-FF (2S-ELU-Type, 4-cylinder, 1995 cc) offers a superb balance between fuel efficiency and comfortable, reliable power.
- With fuel efficiency rated at 13.0 km/L (Vista 2000 4-door sedan VL and Camry 2000 XT 5-speed manuals; 10-mode Ministry of Transport test values), this remarkable powerplant ranks in the upper echelons of the two-liter class.
- Maximum power rating is 120 ps at 5,400 rpm, with maximum torque of 17.6 kg-m at 4,000 rpm. This remarkable performance curve offers superb response and pickup under general driving conditions.
- These new Vista and Camry models are the first Japanese FWD passenger cars mounted with a two-liter engine.
- ECT (Microcomputer-Controlled 4-speed Automatic Transmission)
- Toyota has mated the 2S-FF with a transmission carefully attuned to its characteristics and performance. The result is the world's first ECT on a FWD automatic transmission car. There is also a 5-speed manual version for those who prefer nonautomatics.
- ETC is a world first for Toyota and offers a truly outstanding range of fine features, from top-level fuel efficiency and driving performance to minimum noise and vibration, for a comfortable ride in every way.
- Driving pleasure is further enhanced by allowing the user to select from three driving models―normal, economy and power―to fit whatever road and traffic conditions he encounters.
- Newly Developed 2S-FF Engine
- Vista 5-Door Liftback
- Fresh, Sporty Styling
- This liftback maintains all the luxury of a sedan, yet is 25 mm lower than the 4-door sedan, for fresher, more sporty styling.
- With the lower height and optimum configuration in the rear body area, air resistance (coefficient of drag) has been cut to an impressive 0.35.
- Roomy Cabin for Maximum Utility
- The rear seat may be folded down on either the right or left, or both sides together, allowing ample space for either passengers or luggage.
- By pulling the rear seat cushions forward and folding the seat backs forward, a wide, flat luggage space becomes available. In fact, the liftback has about three times as much cargo carrying capacity as the 4-door sedan.
- By utilizing space in this fashion, the Vista 5-door liftback model is perfect for a wide variety of uses―whether commuting or recreation, shopping or other everyday needs.
