Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program Names Recipients for FY2001

―In Commemoration of Receipt of the Global 500 Award―

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) and The Toyota Foundation announced today that they have selected 15 FY2001 recipients for the Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program.

The program was established in 2000, in commemoration of TMC's receipt of the Global 500 Award* in 1999 from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Based on the theme of Social Investment for Sustainable Development" the program provides grants to practical, regionally rooted projects in Japan and overseas.

In its second year, the grant program received 76 applications (compared to 25 last year) covering a wide range of activities, from domestic and foreign universities and research institutes as well as non-governmental organizations, in 21 countries, engaged in civic and environmental activities.

The selection committee, consisting of a group of experts from Japan and abroad, based its selections on considerations of the business feasibility of the applicants' activities; the prospects of such activities for future development; their need for support; and how well they benefited their local communities. A total of 160 million yen will be awarded in grants to the 15 organizations that were selected for FY2001. Since the program started last year, 24 recipients have been awarded a total of 300 million yen.

Characteristic of this year's recipients is that more of them are carrying out highly feasible, regionally based projects with local fields of operations that better address the needs of their immediate communities.

TMC hopes to provide even further support to well-established programs on a more global scale next fiscal year and expects to receive a large amount of applications. TMC plans to start accepting applications for next fiscal year's grant program in the spring of 2002. For details, please call The Toyota Foundation at (03) 3344-1701~1703.

*Established by UNEP to recognize individuals or organizations that contribute to greater environmental protection or improvement in terms of sustainable development. TMC received the award in 1999 for its efforts to build a comprehensive system of environmental management. These efforts included TMC's development of the world's first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, acquirement of ISO 14001 certification and active disclosure of environmental data.
