Renewed Toyota City Showcase at MEGA WEB Car Theme Park Set for Reopening
Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that the Toyota City Showcase of TMC’s MEGA WEB car theme park in Tokyo’s waterfront redevelopment zone has been refurbished and is set to reopen on Dec. 4
Envisioned as a venue for displaying about 150 vehicles, the Toyota City Showcase has been redone with a space called the “Brand New Zone”, which has room enough to spotlight up to three new vehicle series in all available color and grades. It will also focus on two Toyota initiatives ― hybrid technology and motor sports. To offer visitors a safer and more visually accessible experience, the refurbishment was carried out with due consideration to making the facility barrier-free.
Hybrid Wonderland, managed by the National Science Museum, Tokyo’s Kazuyoshi Suzuki, will present Toyota’s approach to hybrid technology and use examples from everyday life to highlight the significance of such technology. An easy-to-understand explanation of the workings and technology of hybrid vehicles will be provided and children will be able to try out hybrid carts (pedal-operated vehicles with electric power assist) at Kids Hybrid Ride One, making it a place of fun for adults and children alike.
Motor Sports Square*1 will present Toyota’s wide range of motor sports activities from Formula One to the NetzCup and the highly individual drivers that Toyota supports. To give a sense of the excitement of motor sports, the display will include two types of driving simulators and the MEGA Theater*2, which will give visitors an early opportunity to experience a simulated race at the Fuji Speedway due to reopen in April 2005. Another new facility, the adjacent MEGA Stage, will offer a range of events covering motor sports, music and other fields.
*1 To be managed partly by Toyota Racing School Head Masanori Sekiya, the first Japanese driver to win first place at Le Mans
*2 Projection with motion of a newly created software application based on Gran Turismo 4, a driving simulation game for PlayStation 2 developed in collaboration with Kazunori Yamauchi of Polyphony Digital Inc.
Also reopening following refurbishment is Design Site, which gives insight into the Toyota design philosophy with a display of Toyota’s latest concept cars.
MEGA WEB opened in March 1999, as a car theme park, where visitors can look at, ride on and feel cars. Its History Garage was renewed in February 2002 and its Toyota Universal Design Showcase opened in April 2004. So far, it has had 38 million visitors.
MEGA WEB is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Occasional closed days and other information can be found at http://www.megaweb.gr.jp/English/index.html.
