Powerful Yet Smooth Cruising Tempered on European Roads

Repeated tests were conducted on the Autobahn in Germany, on winding roads, on cobblestones, and on various other European road surfaces to thoroughly enhance fundamental vehicle operations (moving, turning, and stopping).

The 2.0-liter 3ZR-FAE Valvematic engine combined with Super CVT-i (Super Continuously Variable Transmission-intelligent) achieves highly responsive and powerful cruising from low and medium speeds to high speeds.

A paddle shifter allows the driver to shift gears without removing his or her hands from the steering wheel.  The seven-speed Sequential Shiftmatic transmission provides a sporty feel.

The characteristics of the CVT and the tuning of the suspension are European for sporty yet smooth cruising.

The front and rear wheels have disc brakes fitted with brake pads that have a high coefficient of resistance, providing outstanding control and braking feel.

Fuel efficiency is 13.6 km/L, among the best in its class1, under the JC08 test cycle outlined by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (14.6 km/L under the 10-15 test cycle).

European Styling Evokes Luxury

The exterior features forward-extending front pillars that create an elegant one-motion form that extends continuously from the hood to the cabin and the rear.  The 1,810-mm-total width gives a look of stability and provides a feeling of dynamic cruising.

The interior features quality suitable for the Toyota brand's European flagship model.  Designed for a precise feel, the interior exudes luxury through a titanium-finish center console and steering wheel, and the use of leather on the steering wheel and shift knob.

Comfortable Interior and European-size Cargo Space

The Avensis has a length of 4,765 mm for superior handling yet provides ample space to accommodate five adults comfortably.

The distance between the front and rear seats is 936 mm, providing ample legroom in the back seat.

The cargo area length is 1,550 mm with 543 liters of cargo space (under the VDA method), enough to stow four golf bags.

The rear seat set-up enables stowage of long items and features seats that fold in a 60/40 split to offer flexible cargo layouts.

Safety Performance

In the pursuit of outstanding safety performance, supplemental restraint system (SRS) airbags for the driver and passenger seat, SRS side airbags, SRS curtain shield airbags and driver seat knee airbags come standard.  Also standard are Active Headrests that reduce impact to the neck in the event of a rear-end collision.

Steering-assisted Vehicle Stability Control system (S-VSC), which integrates control of the steering, brakes and drive power, is standard for excellent maneuverability and driving stability according to road conditions.

Also standard is an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and brake assist that optimally distributes the braking force among the four wheels according to driving conditions and detects rapid braking to provide powerful braking force.

The Emergency Braking Signal system, standard on all models for enhanced driving safety, warns drivers behind the vehicle to sudden braking by flashing all of the brake lights.

When cornering at night, the intelligent adaptive front-lighting system (AFS) shifts the low beams left or right in line with steering angle and vehicle speed to enhance visibility in the direction of movement.
