Plans finalized for Toyota Group Exhibit at EXPO 2005 AICHI, JAPAN
The Toyota Group*1 (the Group) has finalized the contents of its exhibit at the 2005 World
Exposition, Aichi, Japan (EXPO 2005 AICHI, JAPAN), as detailed below. The theme of the exhibit is "The Dream, Joy and Inspiration of Mobility in the 21st Century". The pavilion will present the ideas of "Mobility in Harmony with the Planet" and "the Appeal of Mobility" - the dream and joy of worldwide movement, based on this theme. The hope is that these themes will facilitate new directions for a brighter and more prosperous future society. The directions that the Group hopes to propose through its exhibit are summarized in the phrase: "A society in which all people throughout the world can benefit from mobility, and in which people, nature and the planet can live together in harmony". Specifically, we intend to incorporate the following five challenges into our technological exhibits: 1) The natural-cycle earth society*2, 2) A revolution in motive power sources 3) Optimum mobility 4) Harmony with society and 5) Meeting the needs of individuals. Within the pavilion, we will introduce performance shows featuring "the i-unit concept vehicles" and "Toyota Partner Robots" being developed as a future technology. These shows will introduce the possibilities made available by futuristic technologies and vehicles that will define and make possible the direction of future society. The show will comprise two parts - the Welcome Show and the Main Show. The Welcome Show will contain a stage on which entertaining robots welcome visitors to the event. The Main Show will take the theme "In Movement is Freedom. In Movement is Life", and present the i-units and robots along with performers in lively movement, in addition to a 360-degree large-scale screen and stage equipment that shows a variety of life, nature ad images of future society, to introduce "The Wonders of Living and Moving Freely" and "The New Relationship Between People and Vehicles". The pavilion will be constructed and operated based on the concept of a "Natural-Cycle Earth Pavilion," utilizing the earth's renewable mechanisms. The building itself will utilize easily dismantled and reused iron frame building materials, and the exterior walls will be constructed from a recyclable material manufactured from post-consumer waste paper. The interior will partially use kenaf and other materials. Once EXPO 2005 AICHI, JAPAN (EXPO 2005) closes, we plan to reuse or recycle all of the building. The required amount of electricity will be generated by wind power. The wind power generator to be built at Tahara City in Aichi Prefecture will produce an equivalent amount of electricity to that consumed by the pavilion, reducing total CO2 emissions to zero. The approach to the pavilion, which is based on the image of a gentle hill, will involve a grassed roof and floral displays that utilize the Group's biotechnologies and greenery introduction techniques, to create a comfortable environment for all visitors. In addition to this, the Approach Zone will feature displays of the Group's environmental technologies, which are being developed with the intention of realizing a Natural-Cycle Earth Society, while the Post-Show Zone (exit zone), which will feature future and advanced technological displays, including futuristic vehicles and robot technologies. We also plan to include a "Future Vehicles Experience Corner." The pavilion will be known as the Toyota Group Pavilion, and the logo mark for the pavilion will be a combination of a person and the i-unit in a heart-shaped silhouette, representing "Encounters and Inspiration". Toyota's technologies will be utilized outside of the Toyota Group Pavilion in the adoption of Toyota Motor Corporation's Fuel Cell Hybrid Buses for visitor transportation between Nagakute and Seto Areas, in addition to the installation of a next-generation transportation system known as the Intelligent Multimode Transit System (IMTS) to transport visitors in Nagakute Area. We will also be participating in research aimed at verifying new energy systems in Nagakute Area. |
(Reference) A completion ceremony on March 24 (Wednesday) will mark the start of power generation at the wind power generator, currently under construction in Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture. A ceremony for laying the cornerstone of the pavilion will be held on March 30 (Tuesday). |

Natural-Cycle Earth Pavilion
- | The pavilion will be constructed and operated based on the concept of a Natural-Cycle Earth Pavilion, utilizing the earth's renewable mechanisms. |
- | The building itself will utilize easily dismantled and reused steel frame building materials.
Lightweight steel frame materials, of the type frequently used in building projects, have been
selected based on the flexibility with which they can be reused. A newly developed friction joining
construction method will be used to raise the building, allowing for a minimum use of bolt holes
and welding, and rendering the materials reusable after dismantling. With the intention of utilizing recyclable materials as far as possible, the exterior walls will be constructed from a recyclable material manufactured from post-consumer waste paper. The interior will partially use kenaf, a aterial being developed into a product by the Group. Once EXPO 2005 closes, we plan to reuse or recycle all building materials so that the pavilion's construction materials waste emission is zero. The approach to the pavilion, which is based on the image of a gentle hill, will involve a grassed roof and floral displays that utilize the Group's biotechnologies and greenery introduction techniques, to create a comfortable environment for all visitors. |
- | Energy for the pavilion will be generated by wind power. The wind power generator to be built offsite, at Tahara City in Aichi Prefecture will produce an equivalent amount of electricity to that consumed by the pavilion, reducing total CO2 emissions to zero. |
*The power generated by the Tahara generator is in fact to be supplied to the local electric power company (CHUBU ELECTRIC POWER CO., INC.), which will supply power to the pavilion. This means that the power from the wind power generator will not directly supply the pavilion but will instead be covered by energy mitigation (the term adopted by the U.S. Environmental Assessment System for activities that reduce or compensate for negative impact on the environment by human activities). |
|
The wind power generator is due to begin generation at the completion ceremony on March 24. It will complete the generation of power equivalent to the quantity being consumed by the Group Pavilion during the course of EXPO 2005 by the day the EXPO closes. Subsequently, the generator will continue to supply clean energy and reduce CO2 emissions for the region. |
