TMC Launches Redesigned 'Ractis'

Toyota City, Japan, November 22, 2010―Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces the launch in Japan today of the redesigned "Ractis" compact hatchback.

Ractis G (1.5-liter front-wheel-drive)
Ractis G (1.5-liter front-wheel-drive)

The second-generation Ractis seeks to unite class-leading1 levels of interior spaciousness and comfort with maximum utility in a compact body, which, at less than 4 m in length, maintains the appeal of the first-generation Ractis while pursuing the amenity of a compact hatchback.

The Ractis remains compact on the outside, but on the inside there is ample room for passengers and cargo.  The vehicle has a cargo space suited to a wide range of uses and it features various conveniences such as a remote lever for operating the 60/40-split, tilt-down rear-seat backrests, a first2 for a compact-class vehicle.  Stylish form, impressive environmental and safety performance, and driving performance born from testing and tempering on European roads, provide even greater product appeal.  A broad lineup of grades is available including the L’épice3, which is casually stylish; the S grade, a sporty version that embodies the joy of driving; and the Welcab Wheelchair-adapted Vehicle Type I With Passenger-side Rear Seat model, which is the first vehicle with factory-installed features for the disabled to gain vehicle-type certification in Japan.

All vehicles in the series qualify for the Japanese government tax reductions for environment friendly vehicles.  The front-wheel-drive models qualify for a 75% reduction in the automobile acquisition tax and automobile weight tax under the Japanese government's taxation system for environment friendly vehicles, while the 1.5-liter, four-wheel-drive model and Welcab Type I With Rear Seat on Passenger Side model qualify for a 50% reduction.

Vehicle Outline (Some descriptions apply to select model-grades/versions only)

Roomy Interior and Stylish Design Convey Vitality

Within a sleek contour that hints at interior spaciousness, the exterior design features projected wheel arches that emphasize the wheels' placement at the far corners of the vehicle, evoking briskness and vigor.

  • Front view features deeply contoured and powerful design from hood to bumper center, while wide front grille and sharply shaped headlights exude originality
  • One-motion silhouette boasts outstanding aerodynamic performance with coefficient drag value of 0.30; Added to character line from front shoulder to rear, forward-shifted front pillars and upper part of rear quarter window extended to rear create side view conveying interior spaciousness even from outside
  • Rear view expresses overall stability, low center of gravity and steadiness

The two-tier instrument panel with accentuated horizontal lines emphasizes the interior's spaciousness and pursues functionality as a storage location.  The interior design, meanwhile, features intricate surface patterning and silver-effect finish throughout, presenting a feeling of quality maintained right down to the smallest detail.

  • Center cluster maintains continuity with meter hoods and integrates with instrument panel to enhance operability; Cockpit-resembling interior space inspires sense of driving freedom
  • Numerous garnishments and silver decoration with depth, together with surface patterning that combines geometric designs with leather that changes appearance depending on viewing angle, convey detailed high quality

Uniting class-leading interior spaciousness and comfort with maximum utility

The new Ractis, with a length of 3,995 mm, a width of 1,695 mm, and a height of 1,585 mm, combines ample legroom for rear-seat passengers and provides plenty of luggage space, even for tall items.

  • Rear seat depth and seatback height (increased by 30 mm4) and cushion thickness (increased by 10 mm4) enhance comfort, while front seats feature thin seatbacks that ensure adequate leg and foot room for rear-seat passengers
  • Large luggage-space opening (widened by 60 mm4) facilitates ease of loading and unloading; class-leading luggage capacity accommodates three suitcases5
  • A new two-height trunk floorboard allows stowage of items up to 1.2 m tall; board also removable

The front-wheel-drive models feature 60/40-split, tilt-down rear seatbacks that can be folded into the floor by using a lever conveniently positioned inside the luggage compartment—a first for a compact-class vehicle.  The four-wheel-drive model is equipped with 60/40-split double-folding rear seats that allow for various seat arrangements, and together with the numerous storage spaces located throughout the vehicle, provide enhanced utility.

The vehicle features a large, panoramic sunroof of a class-leading size—1,260 mm long by 820 mm wide—that extends beyond the rear seats, providing expansive views and a feeling of openness.  An electrically operated roof shade ensures a comfortable interior throughout the year.

The front side pillars, to which side mirrors are attached, have been slimmed to enhance front-diagonal visibility.

Welcome fuel efficiency and satisfying driving performance

The new 1.3-liter 1NR-FE engine with Dual VVT-i (Dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) engine and the 1.5-liter 1NZ-FE engine both come with a Super CVT-i (Super Continuously Variable Transmission-intelligent) for a smooth ride.  In addition, 1.5-liter models feature the Active CVT system with Seven-speed Sports Sequential Shiftmatic transmission and CVT Sport Mode for exciting driving.

The class-leading aerodynamic performance and lightweight technology synergize to enable the 1.3-liter model to get 20.0 km/L in the traditional 10-15 test cycle outlined by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) (equivalent to 116 g/km of CO2 emissions) and 18.4 km/L in the MLIT's JC08 test cycle (equivalent to 126 g/km of CO2 emissions).  The 1.5-liter, front-wheel-drive model gets the same fuel efficiency as the 1.3-liter model, and the four-wheel-drive model gets 18.4 km/L in the 10-15 test cycle (equivalent to 126 g/km of CO2 emissions) and 16.6 km/L in the JC08 test cycle (equivalent to 140 g/km of CO2 emissions).

The Welcab Wheelchair-adapted Vehicle Type I With Passenger-side Rear Seat 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter models both get 19.6 km/L in the 10-15 test cycle (equivalent to 118 g/km of CO2 emissions).  In the JC08 test cycle, the 1.3-liter model gets 18.0 km/L (equivalent to 129 g/km of CO2 emissions), and the 1.5-liter model gets 17.8 km/L (equivalent to 130 g/km of CO2 emissions).

The front-wheel-drive models surpass the existing Japanese 2010 fuel efficiency standards by 25%, the 1.5-liter, four-wheel-drive model surpasses the standards by 15%, and the Welcab Wheelchair-adapted Vehicle Type I With Passenger-side Rear Seat 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter models surpass the standards by 20%.  All models in the series achieve emission levels 75% lower than the 2005 standards under MLIT's Approval System for Low-emission Vehicles, qualifying for incentives under the Japanese government's taxation system for environment friendly vehicles.  As a result, the front-wheel-drive model qualifies for a 75% reduction in the automobile acquisition tax and automobile weight tax, while the 1.5-liter, four-wheel-drive model and the Welcab Wheelchair-adapted Vehicle Type I With Passenger-side Rear Seat model qualify for 50% reductions.

An Eco Driving Indicator that shows fuel-efficient vehicle operation, and a button-operated driving status monitor that indicates the vehicle's average fuel efficiency are both standard on all Ractis models.

Eco-VAS (Eco-Vehicle Assessment System)—Toyota's comprehensive environmental impact assessment system—has efficiently reduced the environmental impact of the redesigned Ractis.

A review of materials, processing methods and adhesives used for interior parts has reduced sometimes-unpleasant interior odors emitted to levels below the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association's "Vehicle Cabin VOC Testing Methods (for Passenger Cars)" voluntary standards.

EBD (electronic brake-force distribution) and ABS are standard on all models.

The Ractis features an omni-directional compatibility structure to provide outstanding collision safety performance in the event of a collision from the front, side, or rear.  In addition, a pedestrian-injury-lessening body has been adopted to minimize impact to the head and legs of pedestrians in the unfortunate event of a collision.

All vehicles come equipped with SRS airbags for both the driver and front-passenger seats.  SRS side airbags also provide chest protection, while SRS curtain-shield airbags aim to reduce head injuries.

Enhanced Lineup Offers Numerous Options

The L’épice boasts its own unique front bumper, grille, and interior colors to create a casual yet stylish design.

  • Exterior design features wide front grille that creates unity with headlights and gives impression of understated style
  • Interior design is coordinated with use of exclusive light blue above instrument panel and on seat surfaces

The sporty S grade—front-wheel-drive with a 1.5-liter engine—is equipped with suspension tempered on European roads and a paddle shifter that allows the driver to enjoy manual-transmission-like operation.

  • Special S tuning provides comfortable and stable driving on various road surfaces
  • S-VSC (Steering-assisted Vehicle Stability Control) system coordinates and controls electric power steering, brake control (including anti-lock brake and vehicle stability control), and traction control to allocate drive power in direction of vehicle movement and assist steering torque

The Welcab Wheelchair-adapted Vehicle Type I With Passenger-side Rear Seat model is the first vehicle in Japan with wheelchair-adapted specifications that has received vehicle-type certification.  (Vehicle inspection by the license plate-issuing authorities, usually required for specially modified vehicles, is unnecessary, thus reducing time to delivery.)

  • Rear-wheel air suspension with vehicle-height-adjustment function produces gentle wheelchair ramp angle, facilitating ease of wheelchair boarding and exiting
  • When in-use wheelchair is on board, two passengers can ride in front and one in back, allowing caregiver to ride next to passenger in wheelchair; Numerous seat arrangements allow for five passengers during ordinary use
  • Especially high roof (1,705 mm) ensures ample interior height; Numerous amenities ensure comfort for passengers in wheelchairs, including sound insulation material installed near wheelchair use-site to reduce noise, and luggage tray on right side

Welcabs: Vehicles with factory-installed features for the disabled

Available wheelchair-adapted models that allow passengers to board and exit while in a wheelchair include the Welcab Wheelchair-adapted Vehicle Type I With Passenger-side Rear Seat model.  The Welcab Wheelchair-adapted Vehicle Type II, which allows a passenger in a wheelchair to board and then ride in a passenger-side position close to the driver's seat, is also available.

A Lift-up Front Passenger Seat model features a front-passenger seat that slides down and to the outside of the vehicle to facilitate ingress and egress.  Switches to slide and recline the seat are on both sides of the seat, allowing operation from the driver's seat, as well.  In addition, rear-seat legroom was maintained by making the lift-up mechanism more compact.  The Type B version comes with a motorized device for loading and unloading a wheelchair.

Friendmatic models allow for the installation of a specialized driver's seat and are equipped with special power steering as standard, reducing the force necessary for steering compared to the base model, to enhance operability during initial acceleration and when driving at low speeds.

  • Type II and Type IV models are equipped with remote-controlled power driver's seat with seat-lowering function that facilitates moving to and from wheelchair
  • Type III and Type IV models are equipped with device that electrically stows wheelchair on roof using special-purpose remote control

Some Welcab models meet the requirements for tax reductions for environment friendly vehicles, resulting in reduced automobile acquisition tax and automobile weight tax6.
