FULL MODEL CHANGE IN TOYOTA CORONA SERIES

Corona Liftback Model Added

TOKYO―Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd., jointly announced today a complete change in the full model range of Toyota's popular Corona series, the first such change in over five years. The new models were placed on nation-wide sale immediately.

Also announced was the addition to the series of a Liftback model, to go on sale in early October.

In development of the new Corona, Toyota's engineers followed a basic theme of providing "a reliable, high-quality family car satisfying the needs of the times." As a reflection of this approach, the new Corona complies with Japan's tough 1978 emissions standards, contributes through better economy to the conservation of energy and resources, and benefits from increased safety considerations. It also has undergone numerous modifications and improvements, in response to new market demands.

The following are some of the major improvements:

Completely New Styling
The basic body styling emphasizes a relaxed mood, fitting for a family car. Although exterior dimensions were kept about the same as in the earlier model, greater space has been provided in the passenger compartment and luggage trunk.
Comfort
A completely changed suspension system and an improved engine mounting have resulted in greatly reduced noise and vibration factors. These improvements combine with the interior roominess and the use of a more efficient air conditioner to provide much more comfort for driver and passengers alike.
As an example of the increased compartment and trunk space that has been achieved even as the Corona's outer dimensions were kept about the same, the Corona Sedan Deluxe model has added to its compartment length, width and height measurements by, respectively, 50mm, 25mm, and 10mm. Overall trunk capacity in the same model, meanwhile, has been increased by 20%.
Safety and Emissions Control
All new Corona models (except those with taxi specifications) are equipped with disc brakes on their front wheels, and certain models have disc brakes front and rear. An improved seat belt system has also been introduced to raise the new Corona's level of safety. For emissions control, all Corona passenger cars use the Toyota TGP (Turbulence Generating Pot) Combustion method, and comply with Japan's 1978 standards. (See Table 1)

Conservation of Energy and Resources
In terms of contributing to the conservation of energy and natural resources, Toyota engineers paid particular attention to designing the different parts of the car―including the body construction―to make the overall weight lighter, to improving the engine, and to improving the car's aerodynamic characteristics. These efforts have given the new Corona outstanding fuel economy.
Highly rationalized design, including that of the body structure, has resulted in a much lighter car. The Corona Sedan 1600 Deluxe model (4-speed, floor shift), for example, is 30% lighter than its equivalent earlier model. (See Table 2)

The Liftback model, which will go on sale in early October domestically, is sporty-looking and designed to fit a wide variety of uses. Besides four regular doors, this model has a large back door that swings up to provide easy access to the rear of the car. By folding the rear seats forward a large luggage area is created which lends itself to many uses.

With the addition of the Liftback model in October, the Corona series will have four body types: sedan, hardtop, wagon and liftback. Also, with the addition of a luxury grade CX model and a sporty grade SL Touring model, the series has been made much more complete.

For the present, the monthly domestic target sales figure for the entire Corona series is 17,000 passenger cars and 3,000 wagons, a total of 20,000 units.
