PROFILE MAIN FEATURES OF THE CRESTA

  1. Innovative Styling
With free-flowing lines setting its basic theme, the Cresta's body styling is a harmony of innovative proportioning that stresses an elegance and litheness befitting a luxury-class personal car.
Designed to meet the basic goal of a "compact exterior with ample interior space," the car has a notchback-style body with four sashless doors that grant plenty of arm, leg and headroom within. The exterior is contoured for optimal aerodynamic characteristics.
Another enhancement in the Cresta body is the introduction of a much broader range of colors, including an optional "tone on tone" finish―a gray metallic and silver metallic two-tone scheme in the Super Lucent version to answer the modern tastes in colors of today's motorists.
  2. Functional and Luxurious Interior Design
The interior design of the Cresta sets new standards in automotive luxury, yet also stresses functional convenience―as seen in such features as the low padding atop the instrument panel for insuring better forward visibility, and the location of meters and gauges in a location handily distinct from the switches and controls.
The interior color choice is blue, dark brown or black―colors each carefully selected for coordination with the exterior color schemes, to mirror both the subtlety and the sophistication modern motorists seek in their cars.
As for the seats, four different types designed individually for the different model grades are available.
  3. Outstanding Road Performance
    • New engines
The Cresta is powered either by the newly developed 1G-EU type engine (6-cyliner, 1988 cc, EFI type) or the 13T-U type (4-cylinder, 1770 cc type) which has already established a fine reputation for reliability in Corona and Carina models.
      Features of 1G-EU type engine
Developed to meet basic criteria of good fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, this engine supplies excellent overall performance in terms of dynamic response, quietness and fuel consumption. Its optimal design for a 6-cylinder 2-liter engine has resulted in reduced weight and size (154 kg empty engine weight). In fact, the 1G-EU type is one of the lightest of not only 6-cylinder engines, but also among 4-cylinder engines available today.
The engine also features excellent acceleration characteristics as a result of its high torque in the medium rpm range, achieved by means of reduced friction loss engineering, improved air intake efficiency through the use of a longer intake port, better combustion chamber design and the adoption of low-speed valve timing. It also delivers fine fuel economy. The 1G-EU is practically maintenance-free and very quiet, due to the use of a timing-belt drive mechanism, the inherent low-noise characteristics of a 6-cylinder engine and the adoption of a hydraulic valve-type lash adjuster system―a first for an OHC engine in Japan.
    • Use of independent four-wheel suspension
The Super Lucent and Super Touring versions are equipped with independent four- wheel suspension. The other grades use a four-link rear suspension, which also helps insure excellent riding comfort and stability on the road. The suspension of the Super Touring version is a special touring type, designed for sporty motoring.
  4. Lower Weight, Higher Fuel Efficiency
The Cresta body was reduced in weight through use of resins, high-tensile sheet steel and other lightweight materials, while one of the world's most resource-efficient lightweight engines (the 1G-EU-type) is mounted in the car to further lower its total weight. Adoption of a low-profile hood, spoilers, side pillars with less protuberance and other efforts to unify body construction have greatly improved aerodynamic characteristics.
Combined with the lightweight body, high performance engine and other integral design improvements, these efforts have given the Cresta outstanding fuel efficiency performance.
  5. Greater Safety
Thinner pillars, a lower beltline and other engineering adjustments have succeeded in providing a larger amount window space, thus improving forward, rear and side visibility. The front brakes in all models are an outstanding variety of high-performance, low-fade ventilated disc brakes. The Toyota "child protector" is also standard equipment on the rear doors of all models, to guard against children opening the door by mistake. Side defrosters which prevent fogging of side windows are another standard feature. Slide- type seat belts with an inner anchor have been adopted, to increase both snugness of fit and safety. Headrests which can be adjusted horizontally to the position that is exactly right are provided in the front seat of every model, while revolving-style headrests are adopted in the Super Lucent.
  6. Comfort and Utility
    • New definitions of comfort
While the Cresta is styled for a compact outer appearance, ample interior space has been provided, and expanded window areas have been incorporated to give the car a bright, breezy feeling. Comfort has also been enhanced through a quieter ride, achieved through design that reduces wind and engine noise as well as rumble and other types of annoying vibration. The Cresta heater is a three-way vent full-mix type adopting a dual level concept in which air around the head and shoulders is kept cool for alertness and the feet are kept warm for comfort. A large-capacity, high performance automatic air conditioning system is standard equipment in the Super Lucent. Radio speakers are positioned in the doors panels on each side, to greatly boost total quality.
    • Outstanding ease of operation
Seats with fine cushion and holding characteristics have been mounted in the Cresta, while the driver's seat is vertically adjustable with rubber supports. Easy adjustment to optimum driving posture is achieved also through a tilt-style adjustable steering wheel. Meters and warning lights have been separated from control switches on the instrument panel, while their enlargement and positioning has made each much easier to read or operate. The adoption of translucent compass-needle-type illumination has also made meters and gauges more easily visible when driving after dark. With provision of large-area door spaces, there are no problems or strain when boarding or exiting from the Cresta. Furthermore, Toyota engineers have also designed in abundant trunk space, the liter- volume being 330.
    • An atmosphere of motoring luxury
An outstanding selection of standard equipment is supplied in all models of the Cresta: tilt-style adjustable steering wheel, automatic trunk opener, automatic fuel lid opener, trunk light, glove compartment light, intermittent-speed for windshield wipers, rear defogger, side defroster, electric-operated outside mirrors and other convenience features.
In the Super Custom grade and above, equipment includes power steering, meter illumination intensity control, illuminated entry system and digital quartz clock. And in the top- grade Super Lucent there is automatic air conditioning, one-touch power windows and panel lamps for both front and rear seats, while options available include an auto-drive mechanism (set option with aluminum wheels), electronically-tuned AM/FM audio system, electronic skid control (ESC) (with aluminum wheels) and a cruise control computer.
