TOYOTA MARKETS NEW CROWN TURBO

Features M-TEU Engine with Toyota-Developed Turbocharger

TOKYO―Toyota Motor Company, Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Company, Ltd. today jointly announced the development of the new Crown Turbo, available in 4-door sedan and 4-door and 2-door hardtop models and equipped with the new Toyota M-TEU 6-cylinder 1988cc engine, to go on sale nationwide today.

The newly developed M-TEU engine mounted on the Crown Turbo is equipped with a knock control system with twin sensors, detecting even the most minute knock for optimum control of ignition timing, as well as a unique Toyota design combining a turbocharger and induction swirl ports for vastly improved power, fuel efficiency and quiet ride characteristics.

All Crown Turbo models include 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive as standard equipment, which in combination with the M-TEU engine supplements power, fuel economy and quietness with fine road handling characteristics.

The main features of the Crown Turbo are as follows.
  1. Powerful, Fuel Efficient M-TEU Engine
The M-TEU gasoline engine mounted on the Crown Turbo is a turbocharger-mounted version of the highly evaluated Toyota M-TEU engine (maximum horsepower 125, maximum torque 17.0 kg·m). Through adoption of the Toyota-developed twin sensor-equipped knock control system with induction swirl ports, maximum horsepower in the M-TEU has been effectively boosted to 145 at 5,600 rpm and maximum torque to 21.5 kg·m at 3,000 rpm, greatly elevating fuel efficiency.
  2. Four-Speed Automatic Transmission with Overdrive
Excellent Fuel Efficiency and Road Handling
To supplement its new and fuel efficient turbo engine, the Crown Turbo also features a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Optimization of the final gear ratio and other advances adopted in this transmission have helped provide fine fuel efficiency values of 8.2 km/ L under the Japanese Ministry of Transport (MOT) 10-mode measurement system and 15.0 km/ L on a set course at 60 km/h (MOT notification values).
This Toyota automatic transmission greatly facilitates smooth acceleration from low to high speeds, excellent handling and quiet running performance at high cruising speeds.
  3. Widely Expanded Equipment Selection
    1. The Crown Turbo sports top-grade equipment in keeping with its high power performance, including V.P.S. (velocity-response power steering), 4-wheel disc brakes with 7.5-inch tandem boosters, harder suspension and other fine features.
    2. Available in the sedan and 4-door hardtop Super Saloon models is an exclusive and unique color―"Noble Pearl Mica." The light reflection characteristics of the mica in this paint alter color tones and radiance in subtle and attractive fashion, further elevating the noble appearance of the Crown Turbo car body.
    3. For accurate monitoring of turbocharger performance, turbo indicator and warning lamps are clustered within easy view on the instrument panel.

The Turbo Crown is available in five model types: one sedan, two 4-door hardtops and two 2-door hardtop versions.

New available options have also been added to other members of the Crown series in coordination with the marketing of the Crown Turbo: the Toyota Electro Auto-Compass (electronic directional indicator) in the Royal Saloon hardtop; and a microprocessed automatic air conditioner using microcomputers to automatically turn on and off the air compressor, change from interior to exterior air flow and operate a bi-level mechanism, thereby maintaining desired cabin temperature (in the Royal Saloon lounge seat model).

The tentative monthly sales target for the Toyota Crown Trubo series has been set at 2,000 units.

RE: International Trade Commission Findings

Sadazo Yamamoto
President
Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd.

Toyota welcomes the recent findings of the United States International Trade Commission (ITC), that imported vehicles are neither causing serious injury, nor any threat of serious injury, to the American automobile industry. Those findings are consistent with the views we ourselves have repeatedly put forward during the ITC's Public Hearings, and on other occasions.

As we have consistently maintained in the past, the American automakers are in fact now moving forward with their own small-car strategies, and are certain to regain their formerly strong competitive vigor. In fact, it should be pointed out, concrete signs of this trend have already begun to emerge.

Toyota will respond in future to the changing situation in the United States as always―by continuing to conduct its export activities with both prudence and fairness.
