TOYOTA ANNOUNCES FULL MODEL CHANGE IN MARK II SERIES

Adds Luxury-grade Grande Model to Top of Series

TOKYO―Toyota Motor Company, Ltd., and Toyota Motor Sales Company, Ltd., jointly announced today the introduction of a full model change in the Corona Mark II high-grade small-car series, the first such model change in the series since January 1972. Also introduced for rounding out the series is the Grande, a new luxury-grade model. All cars in the new series go on nationwide sale on December 17.

The new Mark II was developed to meet the diversified demand in the small-car market for high-grade vehicles. In its design and development Toyota designers and engineers kept the new set of popular values in mind and fixed as their guiding principle the theme of "True comfort and affluence." They were not satisfied with merely providing luxury but made efforts to perfect a high-grade small car with true refinement and elegance. In body construction, moreover, Toyota designers paid special attention to the call for conserving natural resources and introduced designs that reduced overall weight while at the same time raising the levels of safety, comfort and maneuverability.

The body types in the new Mark II series are the sedan, hardtop, wagon and van―the same four types as in the past―but in order to provide an even wider range of vehicles for customers in the high-grade small-car market a new luxury-grade model, the Grande, has been introduced with sedan and hardtop body types. They have 6-cylinder engines of 2,600cc and 2,000cc displacement. Also, the LG Touring model has been added to the 6-cylinder 2,000cc vehicles, thus making the line even more well-rounded. The new Mark II series now has 23 variations of sedans, 18 variations of hardtops, 3 variations of wagons and 5 variations of vans, for a total of 49 variations.

The main improvements in the new Mark II series are as follows

Completely new styling.

Body styling in the new series reflects safety considerations, such as ensuring a wider field of vision. Styling is simple but it maintains the elegance and grace required of a luxury car. The subdued interior provides additional dignity.

More well-rounded line.

The Mark II series has been greatly expanded. An LG Touring model and a luxury-grade Grande model have been added to the sedans and hardtops; 6-passenger vehicles have been added to the sedans, wagons and vans; and a GL model with a carrying capacity of 400 kilograms has been added to the vans. These additions make the Mark II series more capable now of meeting the diversified demand which has emerged in the high-grade small-car market.

Improved comfort and maneuverability.

Many considerations have been made in order to raise the level of driving comfort and to ensure greater ease of use. They include greater space in the passenger compartment and the trunk; reduced noise and vibration; an improved air conditioning system; and the ideal location of interior switches and levers.

Emissions control.

All passenger cars in the new Mark II series have been fitted with the Toyota Total Clean Catalyst (TTC-C) system, and meet Japan's tough 1976 emission regulations.

Improved safety.

In order to raise the level of safety in the Mark II series the entire brake system has been improved and the braking performance has been raised. Also, 4-wheel disc brakes have been fitted to some models, improvements in body styling and in the windshield wipers have provided a wider field of vision, and seat belts have been utilized that have an emergency locking retractor (ELR). In addition, the OK monitor device has been made more complete for greater effectiveness in accident prevention.

Improved vehicle mechanisms.

Efforts have been made to improve the suspension, steering and other mechanisms, and the rear wheels of some models have been fitted with a semi-training arm type of independent suspension device.

Conservation of natural resources.

Body construction and the design of other main and secondary parts reflect a careful consideration of calls for conserving natural resources. As a result, vehicle weights have been reduced, and fuel efficiency has been raised.

Initial monthly sales on the domestic market of the new Mark II series are expected to be around 12,000 passenger cars and 800 vans. The attached page provides data on emissions, performance and fuel efficiency.
