TOYOTA ADDS TURBO MODELS TO MARK II, CHASER AND CRESTA

TOKYO―Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd. today announced the addition of turbo models to their small-size passenger car Mark II, Chaser and Cresta series, and released the new versions for sale nationwide in Japan.

The turbo engine selected for the new Mark II, Chaser and Cresta models is the same M-TEU (six-cylinder, 1988 cc) engine which has earned a solid reputation for high performance in the Toyota Crown and Soarer passenger cars. Equipped with a knock control system with twin sensors for optimum control of ignition timing, this engine also embodies a unique Toyota design combining a turbocharger and induction swirl ports for vastly improved power, fuel efficiency and quiet ride performance.

Four turbocharged versions each of the Mark II and Chaser are available (two sedans and two hardtops), and two versions of the Cresta. All models include 4-speed automatic transmissions with overdrive, to enhance the effects of their turbo powerplants.
The main features of the Mark II, Chaser and Cresta turbo models are as follows.

  1. Powerful, Fuel Efficient M-TEU Engine
The M-TEU gasoline engine mounted on the Mark II, Chaser and Cresta is equipped with the Toyota-developed twin sensor-equipped knock control system and induction swirl ports, boosting maximum horsepower to 145 ps at 5,600 rpm and maximum torque to 21.5 kg·m at 3,000 rpm, greatly elevating power and fuel efficiency.
  2. Four-Speed AT with Overdrive For Superb Fuel Efficiency and Road Handling
Complementing the powerful turbo engine is the 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Optimization of final gear ratio and other advances contribute to outstanding fuel efficiency―8.5 km/L under the Japanese Ministry of Transport (MOT) 10-mode measurement system and 16.5 km/L at 60 km/h (MOT notification values).
This unique Toyota automatic transmission ensures smooth acceleration before and after the turbocharger begins to function, guaranteeing excellent handling and quiet running at high cruising speeds.
  3. Expanded Equipment Selection
The Mark II Grande Turbo and LG Touring Turbo, the Chaser Avante Turbo and SG Touring Turbo, and the Cresta Super Lucent Turbo and Super Touring Turbo are equipped with the same top-grade equipment as the same models already available without turbocharging. The Turbo versions, however, add the following new features.
    • Needle-type boost meter indicating turbocharger pressure and a turbocharger malfunction warning lamp clustered on the instrument panel. (Available on all models)
    • Elegant yet sporty two-tone interiors. (Optional on the Mark II Grande Hardtop, Chaser Avante Hardtop and Cresta Super Lucent)
      Note
The models described in this release are available only in Japan.
    • Fashionable bronze-tinted glass (with brown interiors). (Standard equipment on Mark II Grande, Chaser Avante and Cresta Super Lucent)
    • Sporty seats with a combination of striped and solid color knit (Standard equipment on Mark II LG Touring, Chaser SG Touring and Cresta Super Touring)
