TOYOTA PRESENTS GALA EXHIBITS AT 24TH TOKYO MOTOR SHOW
THEME IS "NEW TECHNOLOGY―THE AGE OF TOYOTA"
Previews of Toyota Technology for Today and Tomorrow
TOKYO―Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd. are preparing a rich variety of exhibits for the 24th Tokyo Motor Show, to be held in Tokyo at Harumi International Fairgrounds from October 30 (Friday) through November 10 (Tuesday). The Toyota theme for the biennial event is "New Technology―The Age of Toyota." Toyota displays include 40 regularly marketed vehicles (21 in the the Passenger Car Pavilion, 18 in the Commercial Vehicle Pavilion and one in the outside special vehicles display), to showcase the enormous breadth and excellence of Toyota technology―plus 10 Special Display Vehicles (five in the Passenger Car Pavilion and five in the Commercial Vehicle Pavilion) showing off the very latest Toyota technological innovations.
Toyota displays in both the Passenger Car and Commercial Vehicle Pavilions far surpass in both scale and complexity exhibits at previous Tokyo Motor Shows. The accent is on gaining wider understanding of Toyota's ongoing effort to produce vehicles to appeal to the varied tastes and satisfy the increasingly diverse needs of today's motorists, the goal at the very heart of Toyota's corporate stance and approach to developing new technology.
Toyota's exhibits at the Show will include a varied selection of Special Display Vehicles. In the Passenger Car Pavilion visitors may view the Toyota F-120, a sporty and luxurious F F passenger car designed as a prototype for a car to meet the motoring needs of the near future; the Toyota RV-5, a new concept in recreational vehicles; the Toyota EX-11, an experimental car outfitted with the latest electronic advances; the Toyota SV-2, a special model designed to showcase the superior features of the Toyota Celica; and the Toyota DV-1, a car specially developed for persons with upper extremity handicaps. In the Commercial Vehicle Pavilion, Toyota's five Special Display Vehicles will be the Toyota Quick Delivery, a truck ideal for short run/small lot collection and delivery, and other vehicles. Four Special Display Engines will also be exhibited in various locations. Among them will be the pathbreaking LASRE Twin Cam 6·1G-24 valve engine, to further demonstrate the breadth of Toyota's pioneering automotive technology.
In the Passenger Car Pavilion Toyota's displays will include four "corners," e.g., the Powertrain Corner and the Technology Theatre, to complement the vehicles on display. Displays in these areas will introduce recent Toyota innovations through, for example, a one-eighth scale wind tunnel, a cutaway car model, and movie and video disk presentations.
In the Motor Show's Theme Pavilion, this year highlighting the theme, "A reliable car, a better lifestyle," Toyota will display nine examples of its latest technological advances, including the LASRE 1S engine, the ECT (Electronic Controlled Transmission), Navicom, Speak Monitor and so forth.
Major characteristics of Toyota's special display vehicles and engines follow.
Special Display Vehicles (Passenger Car Pavilion)
- Toyota F-120A sporty and stylish luxury-class FF which offers the overall excellence needed to meet the demands of a new age of motoring. Combining superb economy, driving performance and comfort characteristics in a single car, the Toyota F-120 offers a clear direction for automotive design for the 1980s. The F-120 is, for example, equipped with the lightweight, fuel efficient and compact LAS RE 1S-FF transverse engine. Other features include ultra-wide tread (1,465 mm in front and 1,420 mm in the rear), Macpherson-type fully independent suspension, sharp performance rack-and-pinion power steering, together with other advanced equipment―ensuring solid running stability and comfort. In its styling, the F-120 features a low, gently curving, slanted nose design, while headlights, bumpers and other exterior equipment are fully integrated with the body to yield topflight aerodynamic characteristics. Comfort was a major consideration in the F-120's design. The combination of a small car body (length 4,415 mm, and width 1,590 mm) and big car interior (length 1,875 mm, and width 1,415 mm), together with a flat floor, makes possible a spacious rear seat in which three adults can sit in comfort, and plenty of easy-to-use space for luggage or other cargo.
- Toyota RV-5An entirely new concept in recreational vehicles, developed by Toyota along passenger car lines to more fully respond to the changing needs of today's outdoors-oriented people. The styling features a wedge-type high roof design, with the "Gull Wing" quarter window rising up to create a sharp, streamlined appearance in the rear―a configuration which goes far beyond previous automotive design concepts. This is truly a vehicle for all seasons and all weather: with the flip of a switch the driver can choose four-wheel drive for frozen or mountain roads, or front-wheel drive for normal city or freeway driving. The interior is designed with comfort in mind: displays and meters are grouped in functional clusters on the instrument panel; the interior is luxuriously spacious; superbly designed sport seats boast excellent comfort and holding characteristics; and an electric-operated sunroof adds a special note of enjoyment. All in all, the RV-5 is a real pleasure to drive and travel in.The version of the RV-5 on display at the Motor Show is outfitted especially for birdwatching, equipped with video camera, color TV monitor, open rear deck, parabolic microphone and other musts for the dedicated professional or amateur ornithologist.
- Toyota EX-11Based on the Soarer passenger car, the EX-11 is an experimental car equipped with a rich array of Toyota's latest technological innovations. Computer control has been adopted in nearly all phases of operation of the EX-11, as part of Toyota's ongoing effort to enhance driving ease, stability and comfort. The EX-11 is equipped with a total of 18 different types of advanced electronic equipment. A few of the most impressive items are listed below.
- TCCS (Toyota Computer Controlled System)A comprehensive control system in which a microcomputer is programmed to oversee all aspects of engine operation―a great advance in precision control.
- Radar & Auto-DriveDesigned to maintain safe distances between vehicles on the road, the radar unit tracks other vehicles in front of the car, with the data presented on a color liquid crystal display. And the flip of a switch activates the auto-drive unit which regulates the car's speed automatically.
- Back SonarUltrasound waves are utilized to detect obstacles within two meters of the rear of the vehicle. The driver is alerted through the alarm buzzer and meter display, in order to avoid hazzards and improve safety.
- Card Command SystemData pertaining to different individuals may be stored on magnetic cards, with driver's seat, air conditioning and other equipment automatically adjusted to fit their particular needs.
- Multi-Information DisplayThe EX-11 is equipped with a 6-inch color TV monitor on the upper part of the center console, which supplies graphic displays of data concerning air conditioning, audio, cruise computer, maintenance diagnosis and navigation, together with sightseeing information and television broadcasts. The monitor's operation is controlled through a remote control wireless keyboard and/or a speech recognition device.
- Voice Command SystemA speech recognition device which responds to the driver's voice and replies to his commands through a speech synthesizer makes otherwise bothersome operations more convenient for the driver.
- Optical Fiber Wiring SystemThe EX-11 is equipped with a high-capacity, multiple-signal transmission system utilizing optical fibers located throughout the vehicle body. Simultaneous transmission of large amounts of data makes a complex and diverse control system extremely compact and reliable.
- TCCS (Toyota Computer Controlled System)
- Toyota SV-2The SV-2 embodies a brilliant combination of a beautiful exterior with excellent aerodynamic features and top-flight comfort. Developed with the Celica Double X 2800GT as base, the SV-2 was designed for true aerodynamic perfection, with large air-cut flaps reaching from the front around to the sides, a three-dimensional curved glass hatch in the rear, aero-wheel covers, urethane covers on the lower portion of the body and other sophisticated equipment. The SV-2's elegant appearance is further accented by a fully detachable glass sunroof, bronze-tinted windows and handsome decorative additions. The interior design makes lavish use of suede to provide a truly luxurious feeling, and is outfitted with a superb audio system featuring an array of speakers―including sunvisor speakers equipped with eight thin-surface type super tweeters―designed to make driving a real pleasure.
- Toyota DV-1Responding to the designation of 1981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons, Toyota has devloped the DV-1―a car designed for individuals with severe upper extremity disabilities. Based on the Toyota Corolla 1500SE passenger car (3-speed automatic transmission with power steering), the DV-1 has been modified so that operations normally performed by the hands can be performed instead by other parts of the body. For example, the doors can be opened and closed with the feet. The car can be steered with the left leg. The shift lever, switches, parking brake and other devices can be operated with the right leg and right shoulder, and the turn signal switch with the head. The fully automatic air conditioner and radio respond to spoken commands. The latest Toyota technical advances are located throughout the DV-1. These include remote control door lock/unlock, automatic seatbelts, vehicle-speed-responsive door lock, headlights with automatic on/off and high and low beam use control, and "run flat tires" which can be driven on for short distances after punctures. After the completion of the Motor Show, Toyota will make some changes in the DV-1 on display before donating the unit to the Ishizue Foundation, an organization which looks after the welfare of Thalidomide victims.
