TOYOTA MARKETS CARINA WITH 1C-TYPE DIESEL ENGINE

Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd. today announced the addition of four diesel engine sedans and two diesel powered commercial-use station wagons to the popular Carina series, releasing the models for sale in Japan.

Developed in response to surging demand for small-size diesel cars, the new Carinas incorporate Toyota's latest technological advances, including the 1C-type diesel engine―a small, lightweight powerplant boasting excellent power performance and fuel efficiency values. In developing the new models, Toyota has paid close attention to minimizing exhaust emissions, noise and vibration, while ensuring superb drivability, handling, reliability and other automotive musts.

  • Highlights of the New Carina Diesel Line
  1. Major Characteristics of the 1C-Type Diesel Engine are as follows.
    • In-line 4-cylinder 1,839 cc powerplant, with maximum power of 65 ps/4,500 rpm, maximum torque of 11.5 kg-m/3,000 rpm, fuel efficiency of 28.0 km/C over set course at 60 km/h (sedan with 5-speed manual transmission), and total weight of only 165 kg. In short, a revolutionary, lightweight, compact diesel engine with superb performance and economy.
    • A variety of noise suppression measures that make this a diesel engine of unprecedented quietness: newly developed small-size injection nozzles to minimize combustion-related noise; together with steel strut-equipped pistons, a multi-shaft drive with a low-noise timing belt, rubber floating support intake manifold, mass-damper-equipped engine mounts and other noise and vibration-prevention equipment.
    • Other advanced Toyota technology included in the new Carina diesel models includes 1) direct drive OHC; 2) rapid heating super glow plugs; 3) injection pump with automatic cold start device; 4) aluminum alloy cylinder heads, and much more.
  2. Automatic transmission diesel Carinas offer the outstanding combination of over-drive-equipped 4-speed AT and the 1C diesel engine, for truly remarkable improvements in fuel efficiency and power performance. The sedan recorded 24.0 km/L fuel economy over a set course at 60 km/h.
  3. Special noise insulation materials have been added to the hood, instrument panel and dashboard, to even further reduce body vibration and cabin noise levels.
  4. Equipment and trim grades offered are generally the same as those for non-diesel Carinas.

Specifications for the new Carina diesel models are displayed in a chart on the back side of this release.
