TOYOTA INTRODUCES CELICA TURBO
Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd. today jointly announced introduction of a turbocharger-equipped model in the specialty-car Celica series, and released the new model for sale throughout Japan.
The new model is a Celica XX mounted with the M-TEU (6-cylinder, 1988 cc) engine―a turbo-equipped powerplant already mounted on the Crown, Soarer, Mark II, Chaser and Cresta. The high-performance engine has already earned wide acclaim in all these models.
The M-TEU adopts a knock-control system, equipped with twin sensors which optimize ignition timing. It also employs a unique Toyota system for the most efficient combination of a turbocharger with an air-intake swirl port.
As a result the M-TEU yields topflight performance figures: maximum power of 145 ps at 5,600 rpm, and maximum torque of 21.5 kg-m at 3,000 rpm.
In addition, Toyota has equipped the new Celica Turbo with its four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, featuring optimal final-gear ratio. The result is excellent fuel efficiency figures of 8.5 km/L at 10-mode measurement (Ministry of Transport test figures), and 16.0 km/L at 60 km/h over a set course (MOT notification figures).
Two different versions of the Celica Turbo were placed on sale today. Major specifications appear below.
