TOYOTA MARKETS NEW CARINA FWD 4-DOOR SEDAN
Introducing the World's First Ultra-Lean Combustion Control System
Achieves Lowest Fuel Consumption in the 1.6 Liter Class
TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION placed on sale throughout the country on May 8 a new, highly economical and sporty "saloon for the new age," the Carina FWD 4-door Sedan. Improvements were also made in other models of the Carina Series, which were introduced at the same time.
The Carina FWD 4-door Sedan was developed as a direct response to the strong demand from customers for an economical and sporty "urban sedan."
The FWD (Front-wheel drive) system introduced on this model has been added to the existing RWD (Rear-wheel drive) system of other models in the Carina Series to meet the needs of an even wider segment of the market.
- The Carina Series now comes in the following configurations

-
- The following achievements were principle goals in developing the Carina FWD 4-door Sedan
-
-
- An attractive, unique style―"the urban sedan"
- A wide and low silhouette achieved by wide tread and low vehicle height, and improvements in aerodynamic characteristics through "aero-parts," has created the ideal urban sedan, replete in functional beauty.
-
- The most spacious interior in its class
- Such features as the introduction of FWD have provided more interior room and larger luggage space.
-
- Top fuel economy to complement Carina's traditional sporty handling
-
- The following four types of high-performance, low-fuel-consumption engines are mounted in the Carina FWD 4-door Sedan
-
-
- Two newly developed systems are used in the new Carina FWD 4-door Sedan engines

The world's first *ultra-lean combustion control system, the T-LCS (Toyota Lean Combustion System), which utilizes "fine ceramics" for the lean combustion oxygen control sensor, has been adopted for the 4A-ELU engine mounted in the 1600 SG models.
As a result, the 1600 SG achieves the best 1.6 liter-class fuel consumption performance, at 17.0 km/liter in the Ministry of Transport (MOT) I0-mode test (5-speed manual transmission), and 28.0 km/liter over a set course at 60km/h (5-speed manual transmission, MOT standards).

This system has improved fuel consumption efficiency, and at the same time lowered emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx). This Toyota-developed fuel combustion system achieves an air-fuel mixture ratio of 23:1 or more (a level previously considered to be quite difficult technically to attain), and maintains perfectly stable combustion. This performance is made possible by refinement of three technologies: feedback control of the air-fuel mixture, a swirl control valve, and **Program Independent Injection. The system's use of a lean combustion control oxygen sensor, to enable accurate air-fuel mixture feedback control, marks the world's first commercialization of this sophisticated technology.
The lean mixture sensor, constructed from "fine ceramics," which have attracted widespread attention lately as a promising new industrial material, functions by obtaining an electric current value proportional to the density of oxygen.
Adopting this system on the 1600SG 4A-ELU engine has improved fuel consumption by approximately 20%.
- **Program Independent Injection
- The extreme precision of the T-LCS fuel injection system required a new injection control that utilizes a microcomputer to determine the optimum timing of fuel injection based on the position of each cylinder.

- The 1S-iLU contains the world's first variable air induction system, the Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS), to improve the actual torque range. Complementing the ACIS, the 1 S-iLU has a large-volume air chamber in the induction passage and a control valve regulated by engine revolutions.

- A 2-way, overdrive-equipped, 4-speed automatic transmission is adopted for all engines to provide superior fuel efficiency and drivability (a 2-way, 3-speed, automatic transmission has been designed for models with the 3A-LU engine).
- An independent, 4-wheel strut suspension system and variable power steering (relative to engine rpm) provide superior drivability and smooth operation along with greater riding comfort.
-
- Attractive, functional new features
-
- The following new features are available as standard or optional equipment on the Carina FWD 4-door Sedan
-
- "Aero-parts": front and rear spoilers and side mudguards for improved aerodynamics;
- A sharp, full-color liquid crystal instrument panel for greatly improved visibility;
- A tilt-and-slide electric sunroof which offers both comfort and ventilation, through use of a new tilt-up mechanism;
- A slide-controlled ventilator which permits direct airflow through vents located on both sides of the instrument panel;
- Easy fold-back, collapsible rear-view door mirrors.
- Carina RWD
-
- For the first time on the Carina Model, highly durable, two-color urethane bumpers are used.
- The technology for applying body paint has been changed, so that the visual effect of each of the Carina's several choices of colors is one of accentuated liveliness.
- Changes in materials used in the interior also give the Carina a richer, more sporty personality.
- Easy fold-back, collapsible rear-view door mirrors have been mounted, and
- A rear spoiler is mounted on the 4-door Sedan.
