TOYOTA MARKETS NEW, IMPROVED STARLET

With Newly Developed Fuel Stingy 4K-II EFI Engine

TOKYO―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today released a remodeled version of the popular-size Starlet passenger car for nationwide sale in Japan. The new Starlet is available in vans (commercial-use oriented station wagons) and 3-door and 5-door sedans.

The Starlet has been praised both at home and abroad for responding in full to the needs of today's drivers for uncompromising fuel efficiency. Unit sales have registered impressive growth in every year since the series was remodeled as a two-box car in 1978.

Toyota has taken special steps to make the Starlet attractive to women, introducing the specially designed XL-Lisse in 1980 and adding various touches geared to please the fairer sex. The result―purchases by women have climbed steadily, and female users are estimated to account for 43.3 percent of Starlets sold in the first quarter of calendar 1982.

The most recent minor model change features Japan's first 1.3 liter engine with electronic fuel injection, an addition which adds new luster to the highly regarded 4K-II engine series' reputation for power and economy. This new powerplant is combined with a rich array of innovative new features both inside and out, carefully selected to appeal especially to women and younger drivers.

Major improvements in the Starlet include the following

  1. The Newly Developed 4K-II EFI Powerplant
    • Further expanding the popular Toyota 4K-II engine series, the 4K-II EFI (4K-EU-Type, 4-cylinder, 1290 cc) will be offered in two versions of the Starlet 3-door sedan and one version of the 5-door sedan.
    • An enhanced version of the 4K-U (II) Type engine, the 4K-II EFI features modified intake and exhaust manifold configuration and optimized spark advance, plus other improvements which add up to an outstanding blend of fuel efficiency and power.
    • The 4K-II EFI has boosted fuel economy in the Starlet 3-door sedan XL 5-speed manual transmission to a superb 19.2 km/L (10-mode Ministry of Transport test values), ranking it among the top passenger cars in the 1300 cc class.
    • Maximum power rating is 79 ps at 5,000 rpm. Maximum torque is 11.7 kg-m at 4,200 rpm―again one of the leading figures for the 1300 cc class.
  2. Innovative Exterior Design
    • The exterior of the new Starlet presents a fresh new automotive image, a combination of features marking new heights in driving comfort and pleasure. Especially outstanding are a large flat radiator grille smoothly integrated into the nose of the car, wider rear window glass area, back door designed for easier loading and unloading, big, tough resin bumpers and wide protective molding (standard on the S and Si).
    • Aerodynamic excellence was another priority, and Toyota responded with a radiator grille fully integrated with a hood painstakingly remodeled to provide minimum air resistance, air-cut flap located further to the front, and other sophisticated advances designed to lower the coefficient of drag.
    • The new Starlet features a totally new and innovative color scheme, with eight out of eleven body shades packed with fresh, youthful tones used for the first time in the series.
  3. Interior Boasts Rich Array of New Equipment
    1. Easier to Drive
      • Special consideration was given to making the Starlet a car perfect for the ladies, with tiltable steering wheel (standard in the XL-Lisse and SE), height adjustable seat (standard in the XL-Lisse, S, Si and SE) and other equipment designed to making driving easier and more comfortable than ever before.
      • Other outstanding standard equipment includes a fuel lid opener operated from inside the cabin in the SE, and magnetic door locks in the XL-Lisse.
    2. Increased Visibility
      • Every effort has been made to enlarge the driver's range of vision and to make meters and gauges as easy to read as possible. New features include light permeation meters (standard in the S, Si, SE), a digital clock (standard in the SE), modified steering wheel design, and other components which make the instrument panel refreshingly pleasing to the eye.
    3. Enhanced Comfort
      • Standard equipment includes large bucket sport seats in the S and Si, and rear seat headrests and lumbar support in the SE.
      • The new Starlet's cabin is 35 mm longer than earlier versions.

Major specifications of the new series follow.
