TOYOTA ADDS TURBO DIESEL MODELS TO CROWN SERIES

TOKYO―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today announced the addition of eight turbo diesel models to the Crown passenger car series (four 4-door hardtops and four 4-door sedans), plus minor changes in Crown vans (commercial-use oriented station wagons). The revamped series was released for sale throughout Japan.

The new Crown diesel models are equipped with the newly developed 2L Turbo Diesel (electronically controlled, 2L-TE-Type, 4-cylinder, 2446 cc) or the regular 2L Turbo Diesel (2L-T-Type, 4-cylinder, 2446 cc) engines. Turbocharging means both engines rank among the finest diesel powerplants in the world in power, fuel efficiency and quietness―superb for Crown passenger cars tailored to satisfy today's motoring needs.

On the Crown Van, Toyota has mounted the 1G gasoline engine with electronic fuel injection (1G-EJ-Type, 6-cylinder, 1988 cc), an engine which fully meets Japan's stringent 1981 exhaust emissions standards for commercial-use vehicles while offering outstanding improvements in power, torque and fuel efficiency. This, the first ever Japanese-made commercial vehicle with an EFI engine, is a truly outstanding van. A rundown of the new Crown Turbo Diesels and the Crown gasoline engine van follows.

  1. The Crown Turbo Diesel
    1. Fabulous Power Performance
      • The electronically controlled and regular 2L Turbo Diesel engines are based on the renowned L-Type diesel powerplant (4-cylinder, 2188 cc), which has earned a solid reputation for its excellent response and whisper quiet operation. These new engines offer larger displacement, and are mounted with the latest Toyota-made turbochargers, noted for their compact size. Power is rated at 96 ps at 4,000 rpm, with maximum torque of 19.5 kg-m at 2,400 rpm, rating them among the top passenger car diesel engines made in Japan.
      • The electronically controlled 2L Turbo Diesel deserves special mention for its futuristic microcomputer control of fuel injection amount and timing. Teamed with the Toyota 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, it yields stellar acceleration and driveability.
      • The regular 2L Turbo Diesel is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission with an optimal gear ratio, to provide outstanding turbocharged acceleration from the low-speed range and on up.
    2. Fuel-Saving Efficiency
      • Outstanding increases in power and torque did not prevent Toyota from cutting fuel consumption in these new models. The version equipped with the electronically controlled 2L Turbo Diesel turned in the impressive figure of 18.5 km/L at 60 km/h over a set course (Ministry of Transport notification values for 4-speed automatic transmission model), while the regular 2L Turbo Diesel hit 21.0 km/L for a 5-speed manual transmission model.
    3. Whisper Quiet Ride
      • Adoption of an epoch-making adjustment mechanism to control the amount of air intake while idling or when the engine is turned off, resulting in conspicuous drops in engine-related vibration and noise.
      • In addition the combination of newly designed combustion chambers and a radically new type of fuel injection nozzle has reduced combustion noise. And the 8-balance crankshaft keeps the weight mass of all cylinders perfectly in balance to cut back on vibration at high speeds―two examples of painstaking design to provide a quieter, more comfortable ride.
      • The result is a vehicle with top-class quiet ride, not only for a vehicle equipped with a 4-cylinder diesel engine, but even in comparison with 6-cylinder models as well.
    4. Enhanced Reliability
      • The pistons of the new Crown Turbo Diesel use Toyota-developed "Ceramic Fiber Alloy" in their grooves, an historic first for the use of fiber reinforced metal in automobile parts. This material provides higher abrasion resistance, more cooling effect and other outstanding improvements.
      • An impressive array of special mechanisms enhance the electronically controlled 2L Turbo Diesel engine, including failsafe and self-diagnostic features which adjust the engine whenever needed, as well as alerting the driver of malfunctions with warning lamps. These are, in short, safer, more maintenance-free engines than ever before.
    5. The Crown Turbo Diesel is packed with quality equipment befitting a luxury-class passenger car, and features two Japan firsts for a diesel car―speed-responsive power steering and microcomputer-controlled autodrive.
  2. The New Crown Van (Gasoline Engine) Models
    • Switching from the previous M-J-Type 6-cylinder 1988 cc engine to the proven excellence of the lightweight, high performance 1G-EJ Type 6-cylinder 1988 cc has qualified the Crown gasoline engine van under Japan's 1981 commercial-use vehicle exhaust emissions standards and significantly boosted both power and fuel efficiency.
    • The 1G's power is rated at 125 ps at 5,400 rpm (up 15 ps from the M-J), with maximum torque at 17.5 kg-m at 4,400 rpm, (a gain of 1.5 kg-m).
    • Fuel efficiency was another targeted area, and the 15.0 km/L achieved by the Crown van at 60 km/h over a set course (Ministry of Transport notification values) is more than a 30 percent improvement over its predecessor.
    • Changing the 4-speed floor shift manual transmission model to 5-speed type with overdrive, while optimizing the differential ratio on the column-mounted manual versions, has yielded truly superior fuel economy and quietness.
  3. Model Lines
    • The Crown Turbo Diesel is available in the 4-door hardtop Super Saloon Extra and Super Edition, and 4-door Sedan Super Saloon Extra and Super Deluxe. Different combinations with 4-speed automatic (with overdrive) and 5-speed manual transmissions bring the total model line to eight.
    • The New Crown gasoline engine vans come in three grades, Super Deluxe, Deluxe and Standard, and a total of four model selections.

Major specifications of these new Crown passenger cars follow.
