TOYOTA RELEASES NEW SPORTIER CARINA

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today released a new series of Carina models incorporating a number of minor changes. The new versions of this popular small car were introduced nationwide.

The most obvious change involved giving the Carina a more sporty look and better overall performance. A new front grille and rear combination lamp design and addition of door-mounted mirrors were the major cosmetic changes. For added performance new Carinas are equipped with higher performance engines and larger tires. In addition, a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive has been adopted for 1500cc class models to further improve driveability and fuel efficiency.

To make the Carina more competitive the GT grade has been equipped with a high- performance engine (4A Twin Cam 16, 4A-GEU type, 1587cc), the first time a member of the Carina series has used this particular unit. For 1800cc models, the Twin Cam Turbo Engine (3T Twin Cam Turbo, 3T-GTEU type, 1,770cc newly equipped with watercooled turbocharger) has been adopted as standard.

CARINA SEDAN 1600 GT-R (E-AA63-AEMQF [X])

Major features are as follows

High-performance engine

4-valve high-performance DOHC engine (4A Twin Cam 16, 4A-GEU type, 4-cylinder DOHC, 1587cc) on 1600GT models.

The sophisticated four-valves-per-cylinder arrangement, T-VIS (Toyota Variable Induction System) and the latest electronics technology, such as "EFI-D," give the 4A Twin Cam 16 engine a maximum power rating of 130HP (at 6600rpm) and maximum torque of 15.2 kg.m (at 5200rpm), both figures the best in this class. Fuel efficiency, 12.6km/liter in MOT's 10-mode test, is also very good.

The turbocharger on the popular twin cam turbo engine (3T Twin Cam Turbo, 3T-GTEU type, 4-cylinder, 1770cc) now has watercooling to improve lubrication.

EFI-D

D stands for the German word DRUCK, meaning pressure, and EFI-D is a fuel injection control system using pressure sensors located in the intake system to detect pressure in the intake manifold. This allows more precise control of injection to best suit any and all driving conditions, and eliminates the need for an air flow meter. The result is reduced air intake resistance, easier mounting, and lighter weight.

195/60R15 tires

The 195/60R15 tires are adopted on the GT series. As a result, the new models have greater stability during cornering, better traction and improved braking power.

4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive on the 1500cc models

Use of the 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive on the 1500cc models gives improved fuel efficiency at high speeds and reduces noise. Fuel consumption is 20.6km/liter during constant 60km/h.

Enhanced appearance

The "sporty" image of the series has been emphasized through a new front grille, rear combination lamps and door-mounted mirrors.

In addition, various other improvements have been incorporated such as better fuel efficiency for the 1500cc 4-speed manual transmission models, addition of an engine diagnosis system to monitor engine performance, and use of lightweight, thinner spare tires.
