Toyota City―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION announced today that it had reached the cumulative production figure of 50 million units, the first Japanese automaker to do so.

The only other automakers in the world to have reached that figure, without including overseas production, are GM, Ford and Chrysler.

Toyota's first automobile was a test model A-l passenger car produced in May 1935 in Toyoda Automatic Loom Works' Automobile Department, the origins of Toyota Motor Corporation. It thus took 50 years and 8 months to reach the 50 million cumulative production mark. Toyota was formally established in August 1937, and the new mark was thus reached 48 years and 5 months from then. Also, it took 2 years and 10 months from March 1983 to move from 40 million to 50 million units of cumulative production.

A breakdown of cumulative production shows that passenger cars accounted for 68 percent and trucks and buses for 32 percent of the total. Also, while 57 percent of the total was destined for the domestic market, 43 percent was exported.

Ever since its founding, Toyota has continually worked to improve the quality of its products and to raise its productivity, under the general motto of "Good Thinking, Good Products." Its efforts have been aimed at producing "Cars to love, the world over."

Nowadays the automobile has become an essential part of everyday life, and Toyota aims through the automobile to create a more affluent society. It is energetically involved in developing more fuel efficient, high-performance cars that are safe and attractive.

The 50 millionth vehicle to roll off Toyota's production lines was a Toyota Crown 4-door Hardtop Royal Saloon G model with domestic specifications.
