Toyota Motor Corporation announced today that it will add a new Corona FWD Coupe to its Corona series and will introduce improved versions of the Corona 4-door Sedan and the 5-door. It will also begin marketing a GT version of the Corona FWD 4-door Sedan. All will be on sale at Toyopet dealers in Japan starting today.

Since its debut in 1957, the Corona has earned a solid reputation from drivers around the world. With the marketing today of the Corona Coupe, the improved versions of the Corona FWD 4-door Sedan and the 5-door, and the addition of the GT version, the Corona series lineup now offers even greater sophistication and variety.

The Corona Coupe

The newly released Corona Coupe was developed as a specialty version of the Corona in response to strong demand from sports-oriented customers. Its trend-setting styling and exceptionally high performance make this new 2-door coupe especially attractive to urban adults.

Styling: Meticulous attention to aerodynamic detailing and the adoption of a "stream surface" featuring wide front and rear fenders and narrow body sections has resulted in low-slung and beautifully proportioned body contours. These clean lines are complemented by wide headlights and a bold vertical grille at the front and the use of cabin quarter pillars which are flush with the side glass. The overall result is a 2-door "city coupe" as sophisticated outside as it is within.

An extremely low drag coefficient of Cd 0.32 is achieved through the "stream surface," flush window panels and a large and efficient rear spoiler.

Interior: Due to the carefully rationalized design which maximizes the inherent advantages of the FWD configuration, the Corona FWD Coupe offers an exceptionally roomy cabin and ample trunk space. The instrument panel reflects the latest in ergonomics, and the 8-way adjustable sports seat both looks and feels great.

Engine: Two 4-valve high-performance engines, the 2.0-liter 3S-GELU and the 1.6-liter 4A-GELU, are available, in addition to the 1.8-liter 1S-iLLJ with central injection.

Transmission: In models with 4-valve, high-performance engines, the ECT-S 4-speed fully automatic transmission with electronically controlled 2-way overdrive is available. This transmission offers a choice of three driving patterns, economy, power or manual, to ensure optimum performance and economy under different driving conditions.

Suspension: To give these FWD cars the best handling possible, Toyota developed a new strut-type, 4-wheel independent suspension, which is perfectly matched to the high performance potential of these new cars. This new suspension system provides a marked improvement in handling, stability and comfort.

A lower brace linked to the left and right lower arms has been added to the front suspension. On high-performance models, a special performance rod has been added to the left and right strut towers, making the body stronger and considerably improving the vehicle's steering response. High-performance models are also equipped with 195/60 tires and 4-wheel disc brakes as standard equipment, ensuring superior handling, stability and comfort.

New Mechanisms and Equipment: The Corona Coupe has a wide variety of new standard and optional equipment on certain models, such as cornering lamps, tilt-and-telescopic steering with an integrated positioning memory, a "live sound" speaker system, new 8-way sports seats, a tilt-and-slide electrically operated sun roof and an air conditioner that switches modes automatically.

Corona FWD 4-door Sedan and 5-door

Interior and Exterior: Changes in the design of the front grille, headlights, bumper, rear combination lamp and other details give it a more quality look. Interior improvements include upgraded seats and trim.

Engine: The 1.8 liter 1S-iLU, 1.5 liter 3A-LU and 2.0 liter 2C-L diesel have all been improved. The 2.0 liter, 4-valve 3S-GELU was made newly available on the Corona FWD 4-door Sedan in response to market demands for higher performance.

Suspension: The GT version with the 4-valve engine and the SX-R model with the 1S-iLU engine share the same suspension and floor structure with the high-performance Corona Coupe, for even better handling, stability and comfort.
