TOYOTA MARKETS NEW CARINA ED, STYLISH FWD 4-DOOR HARDTOP
Toyota Motor Corporation announced it will begin today to market the newly developed, FWD 4-door hardtop Carina ED, and will add a GT version to the Carina FWD 4-door Sedan line.
- Carina ED
- The design goals for the Carina ED were to combine exciting styling, superb riding comfort, and excellent basic performance in a 4-door hardtop.
CARINA ED 2000G-LIMITED
- Styling
-
The elimination of the center pillar gives the new Carina ED an open feeling. The car also has a straight belt line, and has the lowest height of all mass-produced, 4-door cars now in production. In terms of aerodynamics, a drag coefficient of Cd 0.33 places this model at the top level among 4-door vehicles. This extremely low figure was made possible by using a rear spoiler and a flush-body design and careful attention to other details.
- Interior
-
ZDespite its stylish body and lower overall height, the Carina ED's cabin has a great sense of openness with plenty of room for the driver, more than adequate head clearance and sufficient leg room for rear seat passsengers. In addition, the instrument panel, seats and other functional components have been carefully styled to contribute to the car's sporty feeling.
- Engine
- There are three types of engines available for this model: the 4-valve, high-performance 2.0 liter 3S-GELU, and the standard 1.8 liter 1S-ELU and the 1.8 liter 1S-iLU.
Engine | Displacement (cc) |
Max. output (ps/rpm) |
Max. torque (kg-m/rpm) |
10-Mode Fuel Mileage (km/L) (Ministry of Transport Values) |
---|---|---|---|---|
3S-GELU | 1,998 | 160/6,400 | 19.0/4,800 | 12.0 (manual transmission) |
1S-ELU | 1,832 | 115/5,400 | 16.7/4,000 | 12.2 (manual transmission) |
1S-iLU | 1,832 | 105/5,400 | 16.0/3,000 | 12.8 (manual transmission) |
- Transmission
- On models with high-performance engines, electronically controlled, 4-speed, fully automatic transmission with 2-way overdrive (ECT-S) provides optimum operation under different driving conditions through selection of one of three drive modes: economy, power or manual. This, in turn, provides a
perfect balance of performance and fuel economy.
- Suspension
-
A new strut-type, 4-wheel, independent suspension has been developed to provide optimum performance for FWD cars with high-performance engines, and to achieve optimum handling, stability and comfort. In the front suspension, a lower brace joins the links of the right and left lower arms, and on higher performance models, special performance rods link the right and left strut towers directly to the engine bulkhead to increase rigidity and greatly improve steering response.High-performance models come with 195/60 tires and 4-wheel disc brakes as standard equipment for optimum handling, stability and braking (models with the 1S-iLU engine have 185/70 tires).
- New Mechanisms and Equipment
- Many new mechanisms and equipment have been added to the Carina ED, either as standard or optional equipment. These include cornering lights, tilt-and-telescopic steering with integrated memory, a "live sound" speaker system, and new 8-way sports seats.
- GT Version Added to Carina FWD 4-Door Sedan
-
A new GT version has now been made available, equipped with either the 3S-GELU or 4A-GE engine to satisfy the market demand for improved performance together with the added roominess of a 4-door sedan. The GT version has a special, high-performance floor structure and suspension for improved rigidity, as well as the lower brace and performance rods found on the Carina ED, for vastly improved handling, stability and comfort. An all-white version is also available, with all outside panels, spoilers, bumpers, mudguards and door mirrors color coordinated.
