NEW FF 4-DOOR SEDAN ADDED TO TOYOTA CORONA SERIES

Minor Changes Also Made in FR Models to Complete the Corona Line

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION announced today it is placing on sale through its domestic Toyopet chain of dealers a new Corona FF 4-door sedan, a wider selection of engine variations for the FF 5-door Corona models, and improved Corona FR models.

The addition of the new FF 4-door sedan gives the Corona series a total of five body variations: in the FF (front engine, front-wheel drive) configuration, 5-door and 4-door sedans; and in the FR (front engine, rear-wheel drive) configuration, a 4-door sedan, a hardtop and a van. This rounds out the Corona line, which now has a model that responds to every market demand for multipurpose passenger cars in its class―ranging from family use that emphasizes practicality, to the sporty feel in a car that young people prefer.

The four principal points emphasized in developing the new Corona FF 4-door sedan were

  1. Styling ahead of the times
Contemporary, softly curving lines fuse with a wedge outline in the body, to create an automobile that is superior in aerodynamic characteristics and ahead of its time as a masterful work of automotive styling.
  2. Roomy interior and outstanding functional use of space
Use of the FF configuration enabled Toyota designers to achieve the utmost in space utility, resulting in a comfortably roomy interior and ample luggage space.
  3. High fuel efficiency, high performance, and outstanding maneuverability
There are four highly fuel-efficient, high-performance engine options available with the FF 4-door sedan. Three of them are newly developed―the 1S-Ci-FF (1S-iLU type, 4-cylinder OHC, 1,832cc), the 1S-EFI-FF (1S-ELU type, 4-cylinder OHC, 1,832cc), and the 2C diesel-FF (2C-L type, 4-cylinder OHC, 1,974cc)―and the fourth, the 3A-FF (3A-LU type, 4-cylinder OHC, 1,452cc) is highly praised for its outstanding fuel efficiency.

The 1S-Ci-FF engine, in particular, utilizes an electronically controlled fuel injection device Ci (Central injection; see box) and helical swirl ports with swirl control valves that improve fuel efficiency and raise power output.

Central injection (Ci). A microcomputer-controlled injector functions in place of a carburetor and supplies to the engine with computer precision the air-fuel mixture most appropriate for the particular driving conditions, to improve both fuel efficiency and power output.

Also, reduced body weight, superior aerodynamic characteristics and other features have contributed to realizing both higher fuel efficiency and higher performance. In 10-mode tests, vehicles mounted with the 1S-Ci-FF engine have achieved a fuel efficiency rating of 15.0 km/L (5-speed manual transmission; Ministry of Transport value), the top level for this engine class.

The 1S-EFI-FF engine, meanwhile, provides maximum output of 115 hp (5,400 rpm) and maximum torque of 16.7 kg/m (4,000 rpm), also top values in this engine class.

And because of the wide tread and four-wheel independent suspension system used, the new Corona boasts outstanding maneuverability, driving stability and riding comfort.

  4. Attractive new features
    1. The Japanese automotive industry's first all-color, liquid-crystal digital instrument meters lend the Corona not only an excitingly contemporary interior look, but also enhance control-panel vision for the driver and make data easier to read.
    2. With the addition of a new tilt-up mechanism, the tilt-and-slide electric sun roof now provides greater ventilation for a brighter and more refreshing feel in driving.
    3. The new electric door lock incorporates a device to prevent the door on the driver's side from locking whenever the key is still in the ignition.
    4. A fold-up door mirror is handy when parking in tight parking spots.

Wider variation of engines for the Corona FF 5-door

The Corona FF 5-door sedan, popular for its advanced styling and spacious roominess, has had three new engines added to its list of options. In place of the 1S-FF type engine available up until now, it is mounted with the 1S-Ci-FF type, the 1S-EFI-FF type or the 3A-FF type.

Minor changes in the FR series

The Corona models in the FR series have been improved in both exterior styling and interior design, and new features have been added. With a filling out of the sporty-grade range of models, the high performance α4A Twin Cam 16 engine has been added to the list of options. Also, the van model is now mounted with the 5K-J type engine, popular for its high fuel efficiency.
