The award is the result of information provided by 15,446 respondents to the vehicle durability survey conducted by the 2.2 million member CAA. To qualify a vehicle must have been produced in model years 1982, 1983 and 1984. The award―considered the most important available to automobile manufacturers―in based on three main criteria: overall level of owner satisfaction; mechanical reliability and cost based on actual repair experience; and the number of owners who would choose the same car again.

The Toyota Corolla has once again proven itself to be an outstanding vehicle in the eyes of its proud owners: 94 percent of owners would buy the same car again; and 91 percent were very satisfied with the Corolla; repairs were infrequent and low in cost.

Symoblizing engineering excellence and durability, the CAA's solid bronze pyramid award is presented annually to the manufacturer of the car that fairs best as a used car in their nationwide survey. The purpose of the award, won by the Toyota Corolla in 1983, the Celica in 1984 and Corolla again this year, is to recognize excellence and provide additional incentive for the automobile industry to incorporate durability as a key factor in the design and engineering of new cars.
