Special Display Vehicles

Passenger Car Pavilion
  1. The ToyotaFX-1Toyota technology for tomorrow
This vehicle embodies a concentration of Toyota's most advanced technology for responding to the new age. The principal new mechanisms and technology seen in the FX-1 are

    Styling and Body

Advanced body styling was created as an expression of the utmost in functional beauty, demonstrated by the FX-1 is extremely low CD of 0.25.
    1. The full-flush body surface is a symphony of clean lines, with all unnecessary projections removed and sharp angles aerodynamically contoured.
    2. An aerodynamic cooling system is used which reduces the resistance of the air flow.
    3. A unique tilt-and-glide door mechanism is incorporated for smooth entry to and exit from the vehicle.

    Engine

The FX-1 is mounted with a super-performance engine that could be called the ultimate in Toyota's engine series for the new age. The combination of this engine and an epoch-making transmission provide a more enjoyable ride.
    It incorporates
    1. Newly developed, small-size twin turbochargers with inter-cooler.
    2. Three electronically operated variable control mechanisms (variable valve-timing camshafts, Modulated Displacement System and Acoustic Induction Control System).
    3. Microcomputer-controlled, 2-way overdrive, 4-speed automatic transmission (ECT-S).

    Chassis

All efforts have been focused in the three basic performance areas of "running," "turning" and "stopping," resulting in outstanding maneuverability, driving stability and driving comfort.
    1. Responding to driving conditions and demands, the electronically modulated hydropneumatic suspension system automatically controls vehicle attitude by adjusting response factors such as vehicle height, shock absorber damping strength and spring rate.
    2. Four-wheel ESC.
    3. Four-wheel, double-wishbone suspension.

    Electronics

The driver-passenger compartment as well as the engine, the chassis and other areas also reflects Toyota's advanced technology.
    1. The display meters graphically show driving, engine and other types of information via a 6-inch video screen.
    2. The vehicle is also fitted with a voice command system, digital-audio disc (DAD) and microcomputer-controlled tilt and telescopic steering. (A microcomputer automatically tilts both the steering wheel and the meters when the driver enters or exits; the microcomputer remembers the preferred tilt position and restores it for the next ride.)

    New Materials

A number of new materials are used in the FX-1 to realize lighter weight, greater strength and higher performance.
    1. Connecting rods are made of F RM (Fiber Reinforced Metal).
    2. Bumpers and fenders are made of R-RIM (Reinforced-Reaction Injection Moldings).
    3. Disc-brake pistons are made of ceramics.
    4. A shape-memory effect alloy is used as a combined actuator and temperature sensor for the radiator grille shutter.
  2. The Toyota TAC3―an active car for active people
With its 3-passenger open body, the TAC3 was developed with young people in mind, and it expresses the fun of driving. Its center-ride cockpit is laid out in a 1 + 2 seating configuration. The TAC3 comes fitted with a removable front window and a parka top for bad-weather cover. The interior is completely waterproof for additional protection against rain.
Other attachments include large-size fenders, wide tires, a single-arm wiper and a spare-tire holder that also serves as a bumper. A trailer-paddock has been designed as an option. The power train and suspension systems use 4WD and a four-wheel independent suspension system, with an automatic transmission operated by a shift lever on the right side. These features and mechanisms provide the TAC3 with both greater mobility and outstanding riding comfort and driving pleasure.
  3. The Toyota SV-3, a new concept in sports cars
This is a new type of sports car, resulting from Toyota's search for an expression of the ideal automobile for personal use.
The A Twin Cam, 16-valve engine has been mounted in mid-position to achieve the ideal weight distribution between front and rear and thus provide greater agility, more stable cornering and superior roadholding.
The 2-seater interior design reflects careful consideration of passenger comfort and driving pleasure. Also, the sports seats have strong, stable passenger-support characteristics, and with the lowering of the beltline and the instrument panel the driver is provided with a broader area of vision. Overall, therefore, the SV-3 stands as an expression of Toyota's consuming effort to capture the full potential of high-performance motoring.
  4. The Crown Station Wagon RT, a new definition in motoring distinction
This vehicle was designed to be a high-class touring wagon for sophisticated motorists. It differs substantially in status and performance (luxury image, riding comfort, driving stability, quietness) from normal vehicles of its type. It is fitted with a two-step roof, a skylight window and high-fashion, maximum-comfort seats, giving it a feeling of openness and freedom that satisfies personal sensitivities.
  5. The Celica Twin Cam Turbo with Rally Specifications―competitor in World Rally Championships
This is a true rally car: it has competed in WRC (World Rally Championship) races.
Its basic engine, the 4T-GT, has been super-tuned and weight savings have been realized through the use of FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic) in the hood, trunk lid, fenders and other places, and plastics in the side windows. This vehicle has acquired official recognition as a Group B (mass-produced grand touring car) vehicle of the FISA (Federation Internationale du Sport Automobile). In the WRC Rally of 1000 Lakes it placed sixth overall, and third by manufacturer (first among Japanese automakers).
  6. The Toyota CQ-1, a communications technology concept car
This "concept car" was developed in response to the designation of 1983 as the World Year of Communications. The flow of information that can be received on board the CQ-1 is widely varied, and includes comprehensive traffic information, daily activities information, personal information, business information and leisure information. For hardware, the CQ-1 is fitted with a traffic information monitor radio, a road-guide system, a hands-free telephone, a personal wireless, an automobile CAPTAIN (Character and Pattern Telephone Access Information Network) system and a facsimile.

  1. The Hi-Lux RV-4WD, a sporty RV
This is a sporty-type RV (recreational vehicle) that makes the maximum use of the mobility of 4WD and the utility of the wagon configuration. Its body features use of a cover top with a fresh feeling, and a unique window silhouette for letting light in through the wide window-space at the back. It also has a stylish side step and roof visor to emphasize its fashionable personality. The vehicle on display has specifications for use in scuba diving.
  2. Hi-Ace Panorama Saloon, for multipurpose observation
This vehicle was developed as a panorama car, and is a super saloon with a new, breezy feeling. The rear seat section (seats four persons) allows panoramic viewing on either side, and the vehicle has been fitted with a side trunk, turning tray, and first-class audio and video systems.
  3. The Town-Ace Windy, an open-bodied leisure car
This car emphasizes a feeling of openness and a sense of leisure. With a fully open roof and sides and seating six persons, it is fitted with a large-size soft top that can be completely folded down for storage, a hinge-type side door and sports seats for the active-minded. The Town-Ace Windy is mounted with the highly reputed Lasre 3Y-EFY engine.
  4. The Dyna Doctor Car, an emergency medical vehicle
This vehicle was developed to combine the mobility of the ambulance with the facilities needed for early-stage medical attention. It comes equipped with an artificial respirator, an ECG monitor and other equipment, such as an automobile telephone. Voice contact with the hospital can be maintained while appropriate emergency medical treatment is administered on-board.
  5. The Hi-Ace Fresh Store, a mobile convenience store
This vehicle is used as a mobile store, and is designed with a walk-through feature for full display of all items in stock. The interior of the vehicle is divided into sections which allow temperature control for display cabinets in three ranges: -20 degrees C and lower, 0 degrees to +10 degrees C, and a constant temperature of around +25 degrees C. Showcases can thus be laid out with maximum efficiency, making the vehicle most appropriate for mobile sales of items such as fruit, bakery products and confectioneries.
