TWO MILLION COROLLA'S REGISTERED IN JAPAN;
ONE MILLION OVERSEAS

Toyota Model Sets New Records as Over-all Small Car Demand Rises

TOKYO―In connection with the release of Japan's October new vehicle production, sales and registration figures, Toyota Motor Company has announced that its Corolla has set 3 major long-term records.

The Corolla: (1) Surpassed the 2-million unit domestic registration level, making it the largest selling single model in Japan's history; (2) Exceeded the 1-million unit export figure (with exports starting at the end of 1966; and (3) Surpassed the 3-million production level (since its introduction in October 1966).

Toyota Motor Company produced 203,656 units in October, for a substantial 10.4% gain over the preceding month, but a 1.1% decrease from the same month of last year. Passenger car output accounted for 70.9% of October production.

Toyota had a total of 139,611 new vehicle registrations during the month, a 15.1% gain over the same month of last year.

In contrast, Toyota's exports during the month totaled 65,294, a 4.7% drop from a year ago. Of the 46,116 Toyota passenger cars exported during October, the leading model was Corolla (20,964), followed by Corona (11,903) and Celica (8,184).

The top 3 export destinations for the month were the United States, the Republic of South Africa and Australia, in that order.

Imports of foreign vehicles appeared to rise by only 6.6%, compared with the same month of last year. This relatively low figure was due to 1974 model changes in progress (with potential buyers waiting for the new models) and did not reflect the actual high market demand.
