Corona Sedan and Liftback

  1. Styling
    4-Door Sedan
The low front, high-deck wedge profile and rounded body lines add up to dynamic, beautiful styling with excellent aerodynamics.
    5-Door Liftback
The rear pillar strikes a perfect balance between the strongly contoured high deck and the slanting rear window. With the added plus of refined design featuring elegant curves enclosing a six-light window, the result is a stylish 5-door automobile with a fresh, sporty image.
Body size in both the 4-door sedan and 5-door liftback was expanded to further enhance styling appeal, cabin comfort and utility.
  2. Engines
Three different twin-cam engines, the 1.8-liter 4S-Fi, the 2.0-liter 3S-FE and the 1.5-liter 5A-F, are added to the power plant list for the new Corona. All the gasoline engines, including the proven and widely-accepted 2.0-liter 3S-GE, are twin-cam 16-valve engines, making an unparalleled 1ineup.
The three twin-cam engines have a unique 4-valve twin-cam mechanism that is driven by a scissors gear between the camshafts. They are all new-generation engines with some of the highest output and lowest fuel consumption ratings in their class.
The engines take full advantage of the extra power inherent in the twin-cam design. More than 90 percent of maximum torque is available from around 2,000rpm, making these engines ideal for operating in the low and medium speed ranges.
  3. Chassis
All the new models feature a newly designed 4-wheel independent suspension to complement the improved performance of the new engine lineup.
Based on the field-proven 4-wheel MacPherson strut independent suspension, the suspension was refined, including a modification in overall geometry, for excellent control, stability and ride comfort.
Anti-lock brake system (A.B.S.*) and the Toyota electronic modulated suspension (TEMS*) are new available features, depending on the vehicle grade.
    *Notes
    A.B.S.
An anti-lock brake system that ensures stability during panic braking in slippery conditions and steerability when stopping.
    TEMS
A system to automatically change the damping force of the front and rear shock absorbers, depending on running conditions to ensure ride comfort, handling and stability.
It is also possible to adjust damping force according to driver preference.
  4. Body
Body rigidity was greatly enhanced to maximize basic performance and ensure an outstandingly quiet ride.
A subframe has been added at each front and rear suspension support to stop most vibration and noise from the suspension from reaching the body.
Priority was put on reinforcing each body joint. In addition, proper reinforcement and effective use of high-strength steel sheet have helped increase rigidity while reducing vehicle weight.
As a result, both the bending and torsional rigidity of the body have been increased by 30 percent.
  5. Interior cabin space and luggage space
The shape and location of the instrument panel, seats, door trim, etc. were studied carefully from an ergonomic point of view to substantially enhance ease of use and operation. Special efforts were also made to maximize the practical roominess of the cabin and luggage space of the new models.
The new, cockpit-like instrument panel features better visibility of meters and indicators, plus easy operation of levers and switches.
The operating feel has been improved, with shift knobs and steering wheels that fit the hand perfectly and switches and levers that ensure sure, yet light, operation.
The angle of the shift lever for the automatic transmission has been changed to fit the natural movement of the driver's arm during shifting.
The shapes of the front seatback and cushion have been optimized to enhance comfort, and the seatback side pads are firmer. These design improvements are another step toward fatigue-free long-distance driving.
High-deck styling offers the advantage of greater trunk space (535 liters, VDA standard). To further increase the combined capacity of the trunk and rear space, the 60/40 fold-down split rear seatbacks in the new sedan and 50/50 in the new 5-door liftback result in large improvements in usable space.

Commercial-Use Station Wagon

The new Corona commercial-use station wagon features front-wheel-drive and extended tread (80mm front, 70mm rear). Straight-line stability and ride comfort have improved drastically as a result.

The 3E type gasoline engine (1,456cc maximum output:79PS; maximum torque: 12.0kg-m) and the 2C-III type diesel engine were added to the power plant list for the new van to greatly enhance performance.

Interior space has been lengthened and widened to handle larger payloads.
Cargo space has been lengthened by 10mm and widened by 45mm.

All models come with highly durable radial tires as standard features. Power steering is an available option on all models to ensure superior handling.
