  1. Basic Vehicle Performance
    1. Engines
      • The new 3S-GE engine
Running on unleaded gasoline fuel, the 3S-GE engine has such features as a new variable induction system and exhaust manifolds made of stainless steel pipe. The result is a gain in performance, implementing high output and torque in all low- to high-speed ranges, with maximum output of 165ps, up 25ps from the previous type, and maximum torque of 19.5kg-m, up 2.0kg-m.
      • New 3S-FE engine
The shape of the combustion chamber and the valve timing were modified to further improve power output. Maximum output was increased, as a result, to 125ps, up 5ps from the previous type.
Together with these two engine types, the existing 4S-Fi engine (1.8-liter, four-cylinder), which has proven high torque performance in normal driving ranges, completes the lineup of powerful twin-cam, 16-valve power plants.
    2. Chassis
      • Dual-mode four-wheel steering (4WS)
The speed-responsive, electronically controlled 4WS features dual mode that lets the driver choose between "sports" and "normal" steering characteristics to suit personal preference. The 4WS system allows the driver to control the steering angle of the rear wheels according to the steering angle of the front wheels, taking the vehicle speed into consideration. Front and rear wheels are counter-steered at low speed and synchro-steered at high speed. This achieves easier maneuvering in tight cornering, very sharp handling, and outstanding driving stability at high speed.
    3. Cabin interior―new mechanisms and equipment
      • The mechanical-sensor SRS air bag
The new Celica features a compact air bag system with all components neatly packed inside the steering wheel pad. It includes the mechanical-sensor mechanism as a supplemental restraint system (SRS) to the seat belt, especially for protecting the face in the event of a frontal collision.
      • Toyota Super Live Sound System
In the initial introduction of the Toyota Super Live Sound System, a 10-speaker, six-amplifier system, dubbed the Carina ED Super Live Sound System and Corona EXiV Super Live Sound System, have been installed in the new models in order to provide dynamic music entertainment in the compact disc era. The acoustic field inside the car's cabin was thoroughly scrutinized to determine optimal matching of the speakers in terms of their materials, shape, and size, as well as total coordination with the car body. The total 220W maximum output from the powerful six-amplifier system provides heavy low-pitched sounds that cover the entire dynamic range of music sources, plus very clear and pleasant mid-to-high sounds.

Further, in addition to other new mechanisms and equipment, the following have been incorporated into the new Carina ED and the all-new Corona EXiV models:

  • Auto-tilt-away steering

Ease of entry and exit were further improved by adding an automatic tilt-up and lock function, which is activated when the ignition key is removed, to the conventional tilting steering column.

  • Diversity antenna

An antenna is built into the top and bottom of the rear windshield to ensure better FM radio reception at all times.

  • Wireless door lock

The key plate has a switch that allows the driver to lock and unlock doors from a distance.

  • Rear ceramic sunshade

The sunshade for rear seats imparts a sporty image.

  • High-mount LED stop indicator lamp

When a spoiler is attached, the extra lamp enhances the car's style while providing for added safety.

  1. Details of the Vehicles
    1. Engines
All models are powered by twin-cam, 16-valve engines. The lineup for the power plants consists of the new 3S-GE, a sports-type twin-cam, four-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine that delivers high output and torque in all ranges from low to high speeds, and the new 3S-FE, a high-efficiency twin-cam, four-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine with an increased output, plus the 4S-Fi, a high-efficiency twin-cam, four-cylinder, 1.8-liter engine with proven high torque in normal ranges.
The 3S-GE engine, running on unleaded gasoline fuel, has such new features as a new type of variable air induction system and exhaust manifolds made of stainless steel pipe. The result is a remarkable gain in performance with maximum output of 165ps at 6,800rpm, up 25ps from the previous type, and maximum torque of 19.5kg-m at 4,800rpm, up 2.0kg-m.
The newly adopted variable induction system has a second surge tank, located on the downstream side, that opens on the way to the intake manifold. Intake control valves, which are positioned in cylinder passages leading to the second surge tank, are opened in the high-speed range, virtually shortening the intake pipe length, and are closed in the low-speed range so as to increase it, so that the inertia of intake air is used more positively to deliver high output and torque in all low-to-high speed ranges.
The shape of the combustion chamber and the valve timing of the 3S-FE engine were modified to increase the engine's maximum output to 125ps at 5,600rpm, up 5ps from the same engine before modification.
    2. Chassis and Drive Train
The new models have a strut-type, four-wheel independent suspension system in which the steering geometry and all component parts were newly designed, based on the design architecture for the highly reputable FF chassis.
The new front suspension system was developed with special consideration for improving the feeling of steering, primarily through reduced fluctuation of the steering torque during starting and acceleration. This was achieved, among other factors, by means of a Vorlauf geometry, in which axles are located in front of kingpins, and by substantial reduction in the kingpin offset. Ball bushings are used in the two suspension arms in the rear suspension, and the
front-to-rear span of the lower arms was extended to increase suspension rigidity. The result is a markedly improved straight-ahead stability, turning performance, and riding comfort.
The newly developed dual-mode 4WS is based on the speed-responsive, electronically controlled 4WS designed to respond accurately to driver handling. The new system has two modes, normal and sports, so the driver can choose the one that is preferred.
Basically, the rear wheels are turned differently according to vehicle speed and the steering angle of the front wheels. When the car is running at low speed, the rear wheels are counter-steered, while at high speed they are synchro-steered. The maximum turning angle of the rear wheels is 5.0°.
The 4WS drive significantly reduces the smallest turning radius at low speed to 4.7m, or 0.5m less than in conventional two-wheel steering, so the car can be handled more easily. When the car is running at high speed, the new system makes lane change and cornering noticeably easier, giving the driver the feeling that he or she is in full control of the car.
With regard to the two steering modes, the sports mode is designed so that rear wheel steering changes from counter-steer to synchro-steer at a higher vehicle speed than in the normal mode. This implements a sharper handling to ensure a far "lighter" driving sensation.
The 4WS can be canceled by the driver who prefers standard two-wheel steering, especially for backing.
The anti-lock brake system (ABS) is standard equipment in some, and optionally available in all other models, to maintain vehicle stability and driveability on slippery roads.
A "super flow" torque converter has been newly installed on all automatic transmission models. The oil flow is digitally analyzed with strict efficiency to achieve a higher torque conversion ratio than ever before, and to implement one of the highest transmission efficiencies.
Automatic transmission models equipped with the 3S-GE engine have a new ECT-S device designed for total engine and transmission control. This totally controls engine output to provide a smoother gear shift feeling and greater driving pleasure.
    3. Body
The body construction of existing models was scrutinized to maximize chassis performance. Structural joints are reinforced more generously, and high-tension steel sheets used more effectively than ever before to construct a more rigid, yet more lightweight unit-constructed body.
Sandwiched damper panels with asphalt sheet in between two steel panels are used generously in the dash panels, front floor tunnel, and inner wheel housing to minimize vibration and noise transmission from the engine and drive line. An asphalt sheet with resin-made restraint layer, consisting of a viscous and elastic layer with a resin sheet covering, is used on the floor to reduce vibration and noise appreciably.
The body is made with the least possible steps on the body surface and gaps between body panels. The flush-surface design gives a more refined and attractive appearance to the car, while dramatically reducing wind noise.
The new Carina ED and Corona EXiV features an air bag system, incorporating a mechanical-sensor mechanism as an SRS to the seat belt, especially for protecting the face in the event of a frontal collision.
All related parts, such as sensors, inflator (gas generator), and bag, are neatly contained in the steering wheel pad.
When the shock-detecting ball stroke exceeds a predetermined value as a result of a collision, it triggers an ignition pin. The pin hits the igniting chemicals in the inflator, which are fired by the energy of the pin, and gas is generated quickly as a result. The bag is inflated in front of the driver as soon as a collision shock is detected, reducing the physical shock to the face.
