Toyota Introduces Newly-Remodeled Celica GT-Four

Limited Edition WRC Model Also Available

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION introduced its newly remodeled Celica GT-Four high-performance sports specialty car today, which will go on sale immediately at Toyota Corolla dealerships nationwide. Sales are expected to reach about 300 cars a month.

The full-time four-wheel drive (4WD) Celica GT-Four has been the top-performance model in the Celica family since its \ introduction in 1986. The model boasts an outstanding record in motor sports, including victories in both the manufacturers' and drivers' titles of the 1993 World Rally Championship (WRC), which, along with the FI Championships, is one of the world's top two events in motor sports.

Many years of Toyota's WRC competition experience and subsequent victory went in to the development of the new Celica GT-Four. Suggestions from Toyota Team Europe (TTE) drivers regarding the functional design of the exterior were assiduously adopted, and engine and chassis performance were also improved. Toyota has also introduced a limited-edition Group A model fitted to WRC specifications.

Toyota Celica GT-Four Product Highlights

  1. Design
With its diagonal mesh grids and large central "power" bulge, the new all-aluminum engine hood emphasizes the GT-Four7s potent, sporty looks.
    • Use of aluminum reduces hood weight by about 8kg
    • Center-right air-inlet maintains highly efficient cooling of the timing belt in severe running conditions
    • The large right and left air outlets improve cooling efficiency inside the engine compartment
Specially designed bumpers sport practical and esthetic features.
    • Diagonal mesh grids on upper grill enhance front mask
    • Upper and lower grills, air-intake system, and bumper slits allow higher air intake volume to improve efficiency of engine compartment cooling
    • Circular fog lamps fitted in the lower grill provide better visibility
New 16-inch aluminum wheels with three-spoke hubs create a powerful and original look.
    • Wider rim size (from 15 x 6.5JJ to 16 x 7.5JJ) improves controllability and running stability
    • Larger openings improve brake cooling efficiency
  2. Engine and Suspension
Years of rally experience went into the development of the new 2-liter turbo engine exclusively designed for the GT-Four. An improved turbo charger, intake and exhaust systems, and valve system help boost maximum power to 255PS, 30PS higher than the conventional Celica. Other advantages include higher torque in a wider engine RPM range, and a smoother increase to higher RPM ranges.
    • Larger turbo charger compressor for higher pressurecharging efficiency
    • Larger, water-cooled inter-cooler improves cooling efficiency
    • Modified design of water jacket for cylinder heads and use of lather-clad valve seats enhances enginecooling efficiency intake.
    • Increased intake valve lift improves efficiency
    • Higher capacity intake manifold surge tank improves intake efficiency
  3. Full-time four-wheel drive (4WD)
The full-time 4WD combines a central differential and a limited-slip differential (LSD) with viscous coupling. Optimal torque is distributed automatically to the front and rear wheels according to the condition of road surface, for superb running stability.
The rear differential has a torque-sensing LSD that efficiently transfers traction to the road surface and controls the position of the car.
  4. Brake system
The Celica GT-Four uses an exclusive ventilated disk braking system on the front and rear brakes for stable braking efficiency. The disk diameter has been increased to match the larger wheel diameter (from 15 to 16 inches). Spiral fin rotors with a high ventilation capacity are used for the front brakes, which sustain the highest load, to obtain excellent anti-fade performance by suppressing heat build-up through efficient cooling.
For high braking efficiency, opposed 4-piston-type calipers are used on the front brakes and opposed 2-piston-type calipers are fitted on the rear breaks. The calipers are made entirely of aluminum to reduce unsprung weight.
The sports type antilock brake system (ABS) is available as an option. In addition to maintaining the superb performance of conventional ABS, the sports type ABS generates different modes of control appropriate for differing car and road surface conditions, giving the driver even better control and driving comfort. It is exceptionally effective for sharp turns on dry asphalt roads and other road surfaces with a high coefficient of friction.
  5. Suspension system
The Celica GT-Four's front suspension has a super strut suspension as standard. Superior grip on the road surface during turns maintains superior running performance and stability.
Steering performance is further upgraded by a performance rod fitted as standard on the front and rear suspension, which increases lateral rigidity.
  6. Limited-edition WRC Model
A limited edition Group A homologation-based model will also go on sale. Toyota will make a total of 2,500 units, with about 2,100 units for the Japanese market, and the remainder for international sales.
    Main Items of Special Equipment
    • Exclusively designed large rear spoiler for greater down force
    • Hood air scoop for increased passenger compartment ventilation during high-speed driving
    • Exterior finish in Super White II, the basic rally color
