TOYOTA ADDS FULL-TIME 4WD TO CORONA AND CARINA LINEUP

 

Toyota City―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today announced the addition of full-time 4WD models to its Corona and Carina sedan lineup.

The new models are equipped with a center differential and mounted with a 1.6-liter twin-cam 4A-FE engine for excellent performance and stability.

Major Features
  1. Full-Time 4WD with Center Differential
    The full-time 4WD models of the Corona and Carina sedan use a center differential to compensate for the rotational difference between the front and rear axles that occurs in cornering, thus facilitating a smooth drive while continuously transferring power to the four wheels.
  2. HYMATIC Full-Time 4WD (for Automatic Transmission Models)
    In automatic transmission models, the center differential control system and a hydraulic multiplate clutch called HYMATIC (Hydraulic Multiplate Active Traction Intelligent Control) are standard features.
    The HYMATIC full-time 4WD system adjusts oil pressures applied to the hydraulic multiplate clutch depending on shift position, vehicle speed, throttle opening and other conditions, to control and limit the operation of the center differential thereby assuring better traction and smooth cornering.
  3. Center Differential with Mechanical Lock
    Models with manual transmissions adopt a center differential with a mechanical-lock system which allows the driver to lock the center differential using the switch inside the cabin.
    By evenly transmitting driving force to all four wheels, this makes it easy to drive out of mud or start on slick roads.
  4. 1.6-Liter Twin-Cam 16-Valve EFI Engine
    The new models come equipped with the 1.6-liter twin-cam 4A-FE, which provides top performance and lower fuel consumption, as well as high torque in the low to medium rpm range.
    As standard equipment, the 3-liter models have high-performance 225/50R16 92V (Goodyear Eagle VR) tires with an aspect ratio of 50 and 16-inch aluminum wheels, which help further improve stability, riding comfort and cornering. The diameter of the brake disks has been increased to improve braking capability.
    Power steering for the 7M-GTEU and 1G-GTEU engines has also been improved to add natural feeling.
    Automatic transmission models are equipped with a shift lock system that prevents improper operation. The shift lock system is a combination of the following two devices:
    1. Key interlocking shift lock device
      A device allowing the driver to shift from "Park" to another position only if he depresses the brake pedal, and allows removal of the ignition key only in the "Park" position.
    2. Shift lever reverse position warning device
      An alarm to alert the driver that the gear is in the Reverse position.

  1. Engine
    Based on the 3-liter twin-cam turbo 7M-GTEU, the capacities of the turbocharger compressor, turbine and intercooler have been increased, and the air intake resistance has been reduced. The engine produces a maximum output of 27Ops (net) and a maximum torque of 36.5kg-m (net).

Performance Curves
  1. Suspension

    Four-wheel double-wishbone suspension has been reworked to handle tougher suspension needs. Changing the spring and shock absorber damping rate and increasing the diameter of the stabilizer have resulted in greater potential at high speed.

    As standard equipment, high-performance 225/50R16 92V (Potenza RE71) tires with an aspect ratio of 50 and limited-slip differential have been adopted to assure that the grip and braking match the powerful 270ps.

  2. Exterior and Interior

    The new exterior includes a front mask with air inlet for better cooling, special solid black body color and aluminum wheels (dark gray metallic).

    The eight-way sports seats are covered by genuine leather. The leather-covered steering wheel and shift lever knob were made especially by Momo of Italy.
