TOYOTA ANNOUNCES MINOR CHANGES TO SUPRA

All-New 2.5-Liter, In-Line 6-Cylinder Twin-Turbo Engine Joins Lineup

Toyota City―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today announced minor changes to its high-performance specialty car, the Supra. An all-new twin-cam 24-valve twin-turbo engine (1JZ-GTE) joins the Supra's engine lineup, along with a number of improvements to the vehicle's safety features, equipment, and interior and exterior styling.

  1. New 2.5-Liter, In-Line 6-Cylinder Twin-Turbo Engine
The 1JZ-GTE engine was designed to achieve quick engine response over the full speed range, based on the flat torque characteristic of a powerful 2.5-liter engine. The aim was to achieve high performance by optimizing turbocharging characteristics.

Adoption of a Ceramic Twin-Turbo System

The twin-turbo system was adopted to give a smaller and lighter turbocharger unit, while the ceramic turbine blades give improved charging response.

Introduction of High-Performance Technology to Optimize Turbo Characteristics

To use vehicle exhaust energy most effectively, the entire exhaust system has been designed specifically to suit a turbocharged engine.
The large-bore, short-stroke design and the 45° valve included angle allow maximum valve area, thus offering increased volumetric and thermal efficiency. Turbo lag has been significantly reduced by making the ratio of intake valve area to exhaust valve area larger than in conventional engines, and by making the exhaust duct extending from the cylinder head exhaust port to the exhaust manifold more compact to allow effective turbocharging at low engine speeds.
In addition, twin exhaust ports for the turbo system reduce exhaust interference and give improved output at maximum engine speed.
Engine efficiency has been improved by utilizing a large intercooler. Also, for the first time, a distributorless ignition system, Toyota Direct Ignition (TDI), has been adopted to boost spark energy.

Lightweight, Compact Engine for Greater Fuel Economy and Easier Mounting

With the short-stroke cylinder design, the total height of the engine has been reduced, and despite the adoption of a large-bore design, the use of a metal head gasket has allowed reduction of the bore pitch (distance between bore centers of each cylinder). The serpentine belt drive system (in which the power-steering pump, air-conditioner compressor, and other supplementary devices are driven by a single belt) has been adopted for shorter overall engine length, lighter weight, and a more compact engine design.

Greater Strength and Precision Support Noise Control and Engine Response

Computer-aided engineering (CAE) simulation analysis has been utilized in conjunction with sophisticated production technology to enhance the strength and precision of each part. Additionally, by improving the balance of rotating parts, noise reduction and quicker response have been realized.
Major Engine Specifications
Major Engine Specifications
  1. Improved Safety
Along with the ABS available in all grades (either standard or optional depending on grade), a rear spoiler with an LED slit-beam high-mount stop lamp is available as standard equipment on all grades. A driver-side SRS air bag is also optional depending on grade.
  2. Enhanced Exterior and Interior Design
For the exterior, five of the six paint selections offered are new to the lineup (Super White IV remains). Also, on wide-body models, side protection molding is newly color coordinated to match the body color and finish.
Inside, a combination of buckskin-type synthetic leather and genuine leather has been adopted for the new seat cover (option according to grade) to lend both sporty and luxury appeal. Also, seats manufactured by Kaiper Recaro GmbH and Co. of West Germany, and steering wheels and shift lever knobs by Momo S.p.A. of Italy have been adopted for certain grades with the 1JZ-GTE engine.
  3. Introduction of New Equipment
    1. Shock Absorbers by August Bilstein GmbH and Co. KG of West Germany
Bilstein shock absorbers―highly reputable for outstanding performance such as sharp, responsive handling, stability, and comfort―are available as standard equipment on certain grades with the 1JZ-GTE engine.
    2. "Torsen" LSD
A torque-sensing (Torsen) limited slip differential (LSD) distributes drive torque to the wheels on both sides, without a time lag for torque bias, by utilizing gear friction, and makes torque distribution possible by responding automatically to the road surface condition. It is either standard or optional depending on grade.
    3. Sunroof
A new type of sunroof has been designed to slide out of the cabin when opened, saving precious headroom. It is an option depending on grade.
    4. Improved Audio System
Door speakers have been upgraded from 12cm coaxial two-way speakers to a combination of 16cm full-range speakers and 2.5cm tweeters for a greater bass and medium sound range and clarity of high notes.
