CONVERTIBLE AND WIPE-BODY MODELS JOIN CELICA LINEUP

Toyota City―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today added two new models to the specialty-car Celica lineup with the introduction of the Celica Convertible and the wide-body Celica GT-Four A. The two newcomers round out an already expansive lineup.

Two grades, standard and G, are offered for the Celica Convertible. Both mount the popular 2.0-liter 3S-GE sports-type twin-cam engine rated at 165ps at 6800rpm with a maximum torque of 19.5kg-m.

The Convertible's power top can be easily maneuvered from the driver's seat by releasing the lock mechanism at the top of the windshield and operating the switch on the center console. The strong fabric roof is made of three-layered cloth with an acrylic textile for improved durability and water resistance.

The Convertible comes with safety features such as three-point seat belts for the rear seats and a rear spoiler with an LED slit-beam stop lamp for improved visibility. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) is standard equipment on the G type.

The Celica Convertible was planned and developed in cooperation with Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. as part of Toyota Motor Corp.'s program of active international cooperation. The basic vehicle is manufactured in Japan and exported to the U.S., where ASC Inc., a motor vehicle specialist with a reputation for advanced sunroof and convertible technology, installs and finishes the power top. The Celica Convertible will be manufactured on an order basis.

In the newly introduced Celica GT-Four A, a more striking aerodynamic form has been achieved with flared front fenders and rear quarter panels, 215/50 R15 88V tires, and newly designed 15-inch aluminum wheels. The body is 10mm longer and 55mm wider than the normal version.

In addition to introducing these two new models, improvements have been made to the 2.0-liter 3S-FE engine, including a small-diameter intake port and high-lift cam with the compact combustion chamber for better intake efficiency. Also, through the adoption of a knock-control system, a high compression ratio has been achieved for higher output as well as better fuel economy.
