TOYOTA WINS 1993 WRC MANUFACTURERS' TITLE

 

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION announced today that it became the first Japanese carmaker to win the Manufacturers' Title in the World Rally Championship (WRC) with a victory in the Australia Rally (round 10) by driver Juha Kankkunen from Toyota Team Europe.

In this year's WRC series, Toyota competed neck and neck with rivals Ford, Lancia, and Subaru for the manufacturers' points Toyota was able to grab the World Championship Rally with victories at the Monte Carlo Rally (round 1) in January, the Swedish Rally (round 2) in February, the Safari Rally (round 4) in April, the Argentina Rally (round 7) in July, the 1,000 Lakes Rally (round 9) in August, and today's Australia Rally.

In 1990 and 1992, the Toyota Celica carried the winner of the WRC Drivers' Title. Toyota has participated in the championship since it began in 1973.
