Vehicle Outline
  1. Engine Options
The Celica offers two engine types: the 2.0-liter, sporty, twin-cam 3S-GE engine, which has earned a solid reputation in the All-Japan F3 Championships, and the 2.0-liter, high-efficiency, twin-cam 3S-FE engine. The 3S-GE offers improved output and response with modifications to the intake/exhaust ports and drive valves. Different camshaft designs have been adopted for manual and automatic transmission models for refined performance.
In addition to the 3S-GE and 3S-FE engines, the Carina ED and the Corona EXiV are also available with the 1.8-liter, high-efficiency, twin-cam 4S-FE engine. The output of the 4S-FE has been improved in all ranges of engine operation with the introduction of new knock-control and intake/exhaust systems.
  2. Chassis
The strut, four-wheel independent geometry, and components of the suspension have been improved, and subframes were adopted for both front and rear sections to enhance controllability, running stability, and driving comfort.
Super-strut suspension has been introduced for models with the 3S-GE engine for better turning performance and emergency handling.
A four-wheel antilock brake system (ABS) has been made available for all models. For super-strut suspension models, the Sports ABS offers improved driving under harsher conditions. Sports ABS offers more precise control of four-wheel braking through the detection of forward, backward, and lateral acceleration of the vehicle.
  3. New Interior Features
    • Cushion Length-Coordinated Rear Vertical Adjuster
For optimum seat cushion position to best suit the seat to the driver's body, the height of the seat back and seat cushion length can be coordinated simultaneously with a single adjustment lever. (Standard equipment for driver's seat in all models)
    • Multi-information Display
Vehicle systems data and various warning lamps are concentrated in a new display panel. (Optional in certain grades of Carina ED and Corona EXiV)
    • Super-Live Surround System
The eight-speaker, AM/FM electronic radio tuner and CD player system with integrated cassette system offer improved sound quality through optimized speaker layout and a digital signal processor (DSP).
(Optional in all Celica models and certain grades of Carina ED and Corona EXiV)
  4. Safety Features (standard or optional, depending on grade)
    • Four-wheel ABS
    • Traction control (TRC)
    • Viscous coupling limited slip differential (LSD)
    • High-mount stop lamp
    • Crash impact-absorbing structure (CIAS)
    • Driver-side air bag (SRS)
  5. Environment
To conserve energy and resources, the body weight has been reduced―by a maximum of 90kg from previous models―while interior space has been increased.
The ozone-friendly HFC134a coolant has been used for the air-conditioning system. For greater recyclability of plastic parts, Toyota has used thermoplastic materials and labeled parts to identify resin material.
