Toyota Opens New Plant in Australia

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION announced today that Toyota Motor Corporation Australia Limited (TMCA) will hold a ceremony tomorrow to mark the official opening of its new Altona Plant. Guests attending the ceremony will include Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating.

The Altona Plant, constructed next to the existing engine and press plants, was built to help meet the Australian government's call to develop an internationally competitive automobile industry. With the opening of this manufacturing plant, TMCA now has an integrated production system that covers the entire manufacturing process from engine production and pressings to final assembly.

The plant has already started to successfully produce the Corolla and Camry models. The Camry is exported to New Zealand, Thailand, and Brunei, and exports to six Middle Eastern countries are planned to start in 1996 with the first left-hand drive car to be made by Toyota Australia.
