"ECHO" Makes Itself Heard at Detroit Motor Show

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) is hoping to make some noise in the U.S. market with its new "ECHO" sedan―on display now at the Detroit Motor Show.

"ECHO was designed to be simple, functional and affordable, while delivering a level of comfort and driveability that is one-class-up from what consumers expect from an entry-level sedan", explained Jim Press, senior vice president of Toyota Motor Sales, USA.

Slated for release in North America from fall 1999, ECHO incorporates an "inside-out" design concept to create a highly functional interior and equally striking exterior. The vehicle's elevated height and forward cabin provide space and comfort enough for four passengers. ECHO will be available in either two or four door models.

ECHO will be the first Toyota brand vehicle to offer Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) in North America. Moreover, the newly developed 1.5-liter in-line four-cylinder gasoline engine will deliver both a smooth ride and exceptional mileage.

A high level of vehicle safety has been assured through such means as 40% lap offset front collision tests at 64 km/h, and environmental considerations are reflected in the low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions.

The Detroit Motor Show is being held from January 4 to 18. Press Days are January 4 to 6, Supplier Days are January 7 & 8, and the show is open to the general public from January 9 to 18.
