Toyota Starts Monitoring Its New RAV4L Electric Vehicle

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION announced today that it has completed development of the RAV4L EV, a new electric vehicle (EV) based on the RAV4L model, and has been granted a license to use it as a monitor car.

Toyota has put considerable effort into making environment-friendly cars. In particular, it began research into EVs as early as 1969, developing the Town Ace EV commercial vehicle in 1991 and putting it on sale in 1992. This was followed by the development of the Crown Majesta EV passenger car, which was leased to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 1993 for research into commercialization.

Current plans call for Toyota to provide one RAV4L EV each to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. for monitoring. By the end of the year, Toyota plans to increase the number of these EVs in Japan to 10, and for 10 others to be monitored in the United States to accumulate data from actual vehicle use for further EV research and development.

  1. Battery storage under the cabin floor enhances drivability and creates extra cabin space for passengers, and makes cargo loading and unloading easier.
  2. A special charging device enables the maintenance-free sealed lead-acid batteries to be charged on ordinary household current.
  3. The high-efficiency permanent magnet motor is small, lightweight, and has high-power output, thus enabling the EV to achieve high acceleration performance figures.
  4. Range per charge is increased through use of a high-performance regenerative brake system and other devices.
