Keeping faith with the Cynos' compact, convenient size and sporty outlook, Toyota stylists have sought a balanced, evolutionary refinement of the Cynos' sleek coupe profile.

Through many improvements including the latest computer-aided design (CAD-CAM) and manufacturing advances, Toyota has successfully upgraded the quality, safety and overall performance of the Cynos, while successfully lowering the manufacturer's suggested retail price through the same process.

Suspension improvements also enhance the Cynos' high reputation for light and responsive handling.

The result is a compact, lightweight coupe for young people who seek a stylish design and excellent value for money all in one neat package.

THE NEW CYNOS IN DETAIL
  • In profile, the new generation Cynos has all the hallmarks of a classic coupe: from the sleek headlamps, across the elegant, sloping roofline, back to the slim, separate tail lights.
The smooth bodyline sweeping from nose to tail also provides for a low drag factor, thus lowering wind noise and boosting fuel economy.
With an overall length of 4155 mm, and overall width of 1660 mm, the Cynos retains the compact dimensions that have made it a convenient, easy-to-handle coupe, especially in town driving.
A total of seven exterior colors are available with the new Cynos. These include new and refined shine quartz toning (silver-based two tone colors) and the unique and fashionable light turquoise mica metallic (greenish) colors.
  • Safety was paramount in the design of the new Cynos. The Cynos' rigid new monocoque shell protects passengers from offset frontal collisions and complies with all current safety requirements in Japan. The bodyshell can even meet side collision impact standards on line to be introduced in Europe in the future.
Slim rear quarter pillars which reduce blind angles, thus improving rear visibility, are an important preventive safety feature of the new Cynos. A rear wiper features on all models, either as standard or optional equipment.
The ABS (anti-lock brake system) that stabilizes the car during panic braking is offered on all models at a new, low price. An LSD (limited slip differential) is available on Beta-grade models with manual transmission.
A driver's side front SRS airbag is standard on most models in the new Cynos range or available as an option.
  • The Cynos' attractive cabin blends style with practicality. The simple and slim front seats are well attuned with the compact coupe theme. For easier operation, the seat slide handle has been replaced by a loop type on the new model.
For a sharp, sporty touch, the instrument panel features white colored (Beta-grade) instruments, such as speedometer and tachometer. For the cabin as a whole, gray is the theme color.
With an eye to growing environmental concerns, the Cynos also debuts innovative new glass technologies to reduce glare in the cabin and the risk of sunburn.
New UV-cut glass and solar-cut glass block out not only ultra-violet rays, but also solar radiation sources, especially infrared rays.
Recyclability was another key development issue. The Cynos' more widespread use of recyclable thermoplastic resin (Toyota Super Olefin Polymer) for the instrument panel and other interior fittings, together with the front and rear bumpers, is environmentally friendly.
  • To broaden the engine line-up, a high economy 4E-FE unit (in-line, four cylinder, 1.3-liter for the Alpha-grade) is introduced alongside the well-proven 5E-FHE engine (in-line four cylinder, 1.5-liter).
The 1331 cc 4E-FE produces 88 PS at 5600 rpm and maximum torque of 11.8 kg-m at 4600 rpm.
The larger 1496 cc 5E-FHE offers 110 PS at 6400 rpm. For improved torque in the normal driving range, the 5E-FHE engine comes with new valve timing technology, ideal for low-to-medium speed ranges. Maximum torque of 13.9 kg-m peaks at 4000 rpm.
Smooth running, lively performance are traits of both Cynos engines. Reduced friction loss and lower idling speeds, hand in hand with other technologies, helps the engines achieve one of the highest fuel efficiency among engines of this class.
  • For the new Cynos, Toyota's chassis engineers have reconciled the conflicting demands for a lighter, more precise driving feel, coupled with a higher level of ride comfort than before, through modifying the Cynos' shock absorbers and coil springs.
The Cynos adopts front strut suspension with coil springs. At the rear, the Cynos is fitted with a torsion beam axle, securely located by trailing links, coil springs and stabilizer.
  • The new Toyota Cynos coupe goes on sale immediately through Toyopet dealerships (Osaka Toyota in Osaka area) and Toyota Vista dealerships in Japan. Monthly sales target is 2000 units.
