TOYOTA CROWN SEDAN
ENHANCES JAPAN'S TOP LUXURY LINEUP

Tokyo―Following the highly successful launch of the Crown and Crown Majesta earlier this year, Toyota now enhances its luxury marque with the unveiling of the all-new Crown Sedan and revised Crown wagon and van.

The latest addition to the top selling luxury car series, the Crown Sedan not only inherits the commanding presence of the Crown name, but boasts dual airbags and ABS as standard equipment, improved rear seat comfort befitting its status, and the recently released Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) technology which lifts performance while reducing fuel consumption.

The Crown Sedan's exterior retains the same bold silhouette as its predecessor but this time receives what must be one of Japan's most impressive chrome grille designs to date. Combined with an uncompromising headlight assembly, the large expanse of chrome and glass more than adequately defines the sedan's noble personality. From the distinctive front to the smooth flush surfaces and high hip line leading to a more refined, well-balanced tail section, the Crown Sedan exudes the utmost in luxury, comfort and performance.

Inside, the story is no different. In addition to the fluid interior surfaces and easy-to-use instrument panel, the Crown Sedan receives enhanced rear seat comfort levels featuring more rear leg and headroom, rear seats with greater slide functions, adjustable reading lights, cupholders, and a collapsible front passenger seat headrest for improved rear visibility.

VVT-i and 4-wheel double wishbone suspension improved

Powering the new Crown Sedan lineup is a revised selection of five engines ranging from the flagship 3.0 liter, straight six generating 220 ps/5600rpm to the 2.4 liter, in-line, 4-cylinder, turbo diesel producing 97ps/3800rpm. By employing the recently released Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) technology, first seen on the Crown hardtop models, plus a new air intake cooling duct and a more efficient intake/exhaust manifold system, low to medium torque response has been boosted by around 10% across the range. With the VVT-i, optimum intake valve timing is achieved by continuously varying the air intake valve opening and closing times. In addition, the compression ratio has been raised and friction loss reduced, contributing to improved fuel economy. Furthermore, the higher rigidity of components contributes to reduced noise levels. The result is smoother and swifter acceleration and ample overtaking power reserves.

To create the superb handling and ride qualities as well as the low noise level expected from the Crown Sedan, Toyota has fitted a completely redesigned 4-wheel double wishbone suspension setup, and a newly developed vibration suppressing cabin featuring Vibration Isolated Progressively Silent (VIPS) technology.

For improved traction on the top grade models, the new Crown has fulltime 4WD with an electronically controlled center differential that distributes optimum torque between the front and rear drive wheels at ratios ranging from 30:70 to 50:50 (front:rear). Limits of adhesion are improved while maintaining that all important rear-wheel drive feeling so suited to luxury sedans.

ABS, dual airbags as standard equipment

Safety levels are the highest in their class. The Crown Sedan list of safety features is as long as it is impressive. Four-wheel ABS, dual SRS airbags, a more rigid chassis, headlights and tail-lights with improved light distribution, improved driver visibility and revised offset crash impact absorption.
Pretensioner front seatbelts are standard on all models, whereas full-time 4WD, TRC and GPS navigation are available on the higher grade variants.

Toyota has also endeavored to improve the Crown Sedan's environmental-friendliness. Apart from the fitting of the VVT-i, a new flex lock-up system on the 3.0 liter series helps to improve fuel consumption by a maximum of 18% which translates into a very respectable 9.4km/liter result.

CROWN STATION WAGON AND VAN REVISED

In addition to the launch of the all-new Crown Sedan, Toyota also presents the revised Crown station wagon and van.

Featuring a modified tail lamp design giving the wagon a more elegant appearance, the revised lineup now boasts a sporty rear spoiler mounted to the back door.

The more comfortable interior receives new, more exquisite trim on major grades.

Other refinements to the wagon include an electronically-operated telescopic and tilt function for the steering column and a retractable cup holder, and for the Touring Selection model, larger 205/65R15 tires with aluminum wheels, a leather steering wheel and shift lever and side mud guards.

A standard driver's side airbag ensures that safety levels are lifted and 4-wheel ABS provides sufficient stopping power in any situation.

The new Crown Sedan, revised Crown Wagon and Crown Van go on sale at Toyota dealerships nationwide as well as Tokyo Toyopet and Osaka Toyopet dealerships. Monthly sales targets are 1,300 units for the sedan, 600 units for the station wagon, and 100 units for the van.
