Highly Awaited WiLL Vi Goes on Sale Nationwide

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today the start of sales of the WiLL Vi, a passenger car that embodies the concept of the WiLL joint marketing project launched last summer by five leading Japanese companies.

The WiLL Vi (pronounced "vee-eye") hits showrooms little changed from the form it displayed at the 33rd Tokyo Motor Show last fall, where it was a star crowd-drawer. Conceived as a "four-door personal capsule," it is aimed-like other WiLL series products―at "New Generation" consumers, who are known for their individuality and personal preferences.

The WiLL Vi's combined sense of "fun and authenticity", which is the hallmark of products in the WiLL series, is expressed through the car's creative styling and driving performance. Its distinctive exterior and calm interior provide for a refreshing package both inside and out. But the WiLL Vi's simple beauty is more than skin deep―responsive handling is no less than that pioneered by the award-winning Vitz, which has raised the plateau for vehicles in this class.

WiLL Vi Thrills

Exterior

Several converging planes create expressive angles for a sharp look. Parallel grooves embossed in the body panels make for a distinctive style that combines with a cliff-cut silhouette reminiscent of the horse-drawn carriages of yesteryear.

The front view effectively positions the grille, head lamps, turn signals and smooth hood for a friendly expression.

The shape of the rear is similar to that of the front, creating the same atmosphere of friendliness.

The sides are symmetrical, with arched lines defining the front and rear fenders. With large blister fenders and 15-inch tires located at the four corners, the design creates a strong feeling of stability.

Interior

Rich textures and coordinated colors help occupants relax and feel like they are at home, rather than being encapsulated by a conventional vehicle interior.

The functional instrument panel is simple in design, with the gauges in the center for minimal visual refocusing. The operating systems are practical. These and the ample storage space convey a genuine user-friendly feel.

Bench-type seats are meant to create the sense of sitting on a living room sofa.

Other devices and facilities guaranteeing driver and passenger comfort include tilt-steering, a reflection-resistant inner mirror, and a pollen filter-equipped air conditioning system.

Canvas Top

An optional long and wide canvas top allows for enjoying full sunlight and an open air sensation.

Performance

A 2NZ-FE, a 1.3-liter WT-i*1 BEAMS*2 engine ensures swift acceleration and easy operation at low and medium speeds. This high-tech environment-friendly engine is paired with a super-intelligent 4-speed automatic Super ECT*3 for high efficiency, quiet running and agile driving.

*1Variable Valve Timing-intelligent

*2Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System

*3electronically controlled transmission

A MacPherson-strut front suspension and an inter-beam suspension with a toe-correction feature for the rear provide a smooth ride, driving ease and cruising stability.

Ecological Concerns

To reduce carbon dioxide emissions that cause global warming, class-top fuel economy has been achieved with an all-new engine and transmission system and reduced weight.

The emission level clears regulations to be introduced in October 2000 (meeting the requirements for a reduction in the automobile acquisition tax). And by putting out 25% fewer emissions than prescribed by the new regulations on hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide emissions, the WiLL Vi also qualifies as a J-TLEV (Japan-Transitional Low Emission Vehicle), according to the Environmental Agency's low-pollution vehicle emission technology guidelines.

Highly recyclable thermal-plastic Toyota Super Olefin Polymer has been used extensively for the front and rear bumpers, instrument panel and door trim boards.

The dashboard silencer is made of high-performance noise buffeting RSPP*, which is manufactured using shredder dust from end-of-life vehicles. Recycled material is. also found in the engine undercover.

*Recycled Sound-Proofing Products

The radiator, heater core and wire-harness cover all feature lead-free, environment-friendly parts.

Safety

In addition to a center meter design that minimizes the need for the driver to refocus his or her vision between driving and checking operational status, outstanding road visibility has been achieved with a relatively high seat and upright seating positioning.

Fine tuning has provided improved "running, turning, and stopping" abilities, and ABS and braking-assist allow for greater cruising stability and outstanding response in emergency maneuvers.

Both the driver and front passenger seats are equipped with pretensioners and force-limiter seatbelts, SRS*1 air bags, WIL*2 concept seats and seatbelt warning lamps. In addition, the body assures outstanding crash safety.

*1Supplemental Restraint System

*2Whiplash Injury Lessening
