TMC Launches Toyota Virtual Anchor System for 'Ponam-35' Leisure Boat

- Exhibition at Japan International Boat Show 2013 -

Toyota City, Japan, March 7, 2013―Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces the launch today of the Toyota Virtual Anchor System (TVAS), a newly developed boat-operator-assist system now standard on the "Ponam-35" premium cruiser.

A new grade of the boat, the "Ponam-35sw", is also being launched and is on display at the Japan International Boat Show at Pacifico Yokohama from today through March 10.

To assist in boat operation, the TVAS uses GPS to ascertain the boat's position and an onboard computer to determine wind direction and current flow. The operator can switch between three modes: Virtual Anchor Mode, Virtual Spanker Sail Mode, and Virtual Compass Mode, which are capable of automatically maintaining boat position when the boat is at rest, or maintaining heading when drift fishing, thus allowing more enjoyable angling or other marine leisure.

The new Ponam-35sw grade takes the concept of a premium cruiser to a new level, offering a more pleasurable environment for cruising and fishing through a more comfortable single-helm station and greater luxury through the use of wood accents throughout the design.

TMC will continue to promote its marine business by developing attractive products designed to support rewarding lifestyles and leisure pursuits.

TVAS Functions

Virtual Anchor Mode
The Virtual Anchor Mode determines boat position using GPS and maintains boat position by computer control when the boat is at rest.  This mode holds the position of the boat without excessively increasing the engine speed by aligning the bow against the direction of the wind and tide flow.  It also automatically detects and adjusts to changes in the wind and tide flow to return the boat to the original position.

Basic functions

Basic functions

Virtual Anchor Mode maintains the position of the boat by automatically facing the bow into the direction of the wind and tide flow and returning the boat to the original position.
When Wind and Current Change

When Wind and Current Change

Virtual Anchor Mode automatically detects and adjusts to changes in the wind and tide flow.
Virtual Spanker Sail Mode
The Virtual Spanker Sail Mode automatically controls the boat so that the bow faces into the wind.  It can also control the boat drifting speed in accordance with the wind and current flow for a more enjoyable fishing experience.

Virtual Compass Mode
By setting a boat heading and selecting Virtual Compass Mode, TVAS will keep the bow of the boat at the desired heading regardless of the wind direction or current flow.  This mode can also control the boat drifting speed, which is useful for maintaining boat heading regardless of the wind when drift fishing.
