Toyota Expands Land Cruiser Lineup with New "Prado" Series
Toyota City―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION has expanded its popular 4WD Land Cruiser lineup with the addition of a new four-door version of its 70-series passenger wagon and minor changes for the existing two-door version. The two wagons are to be newly marketed under the name "Prado". In addition, Toyota is also offering a four-door version of the 70-series utility wagon.
- "Prado" EX5 Land Cruiser Passenger Wagon
In the new Prado passenger wagons, Toyota incorporates urban styling, improved comfort features, and greater utility to give this series the look and feel that a "top-of-the-line" multipurpose model deserves. For the new four-door utility wagon, ruggedness is the word, with emphasis on increased carrying capacity and greater versatility.
The main features of the vehicles are as follows
- Prado Series Land Cruiser
Lineup
- The new Prado lineup includes a five-passenger, two-door model and an all-new eight-passenger four-door model. Both types offer automatic transmission versions, making the new Prado series perfect for family leisure and around-town driving.
Exterior
- To distinguish the Prado series from the Land Cruiser 70-series utility wagon, distinctive curves, together with a neat urban styling, have been adopted for the exterior.
- Headlights and cornering lamps are integrated into the front grille. Side-protection molding, aluminum sidestep, and color-keyed remote-controlled door mirrors give both models in the series a stylish profile.
Interior
- In keeping with the demand for functionality, the interior has been designed for total ease of operation.
- Controls are centrally located for the convenience of the driver, and a small, three-spoke, urethane, steering wheel and other features give the cockpit a clean, sporty appearance.
- A large center console with drink holders and space for other small objects provides added comfort and practicality, and large door armrests (provided on rear doors as well in the four-door models) are also standard.
- In the four-door model, seat functions have also been given special attention. In addition to full-flat reclining front and second row seats, the second row seats can be moved 60mm forward or back for maximum comfort, or folded forward for easy access to the rear seats, or extra luggage space.
- The third row seats fold forward to facilitate loading and unloading, or sideways from the seat cushion portion to provide additional rear storage space.
Engine and Chassis
- The Prado series uses the 2L-TE-type electronic fuel injection (EFI) diesel turbo engine for increased power output and torque. The engine, based on the 2L-T-type diesel turbo engine used in the previous two-door 70-series model, adds EFI and opts for a directly actuated OHC-type valve drive system in place of the old rocker arm setup. Also receiving new improvements is the engine's turbocharger.
- The suspension system for the new series goes with the conventional four-wheel coil spring layout. Shock absorbers, coil springs, and other elements are repositioned for enhanced off-road performance, drivability, running stability, and riding comfort. Moreover, the Prado EX5 and SX5 models are equipped with standard two-stage shock absorbers that can be set in either "normal" or "sports" positions to suit road conditions. Finally, in a boost for braking performance, both Prado models get disc brakes on all four wheels.
