TOKYO―Toyota Motor Co., Ltd., and Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd., today jointly announced the nation-wide introduction of a new small-size passenger car, the Celica Camry.
The Celica Camry, going on sale today, was developed in response to the increased demand for personal luxury sedans in the small-size passenger car market. The Camry is a quality-class sporty sedan with pleasant and comfortable interior styling and outstanding performance. In developing the new Camry, Toyota's engineers worked toward three main goals:
- Safety, quietness and driving stability;
- Styling with both a modern flair and superior aerodynamic characteristics; and
- Quality standards appropriate to a high-class sporty sedan.
Ten versions of the Camry are available―five in the 1600 Sedan Series, and five in the 1800 Sedan Series. They all offer the following features:
Sporty Styling
- The basic body styling of the Camry is wedge-shaped, affording outstanding aerodynamic characteristics. It has a low, slanted nose that combined with a hip-up tail lowers air resistance considerably.
- Added sporty, clean styling is achieved through the use of an individualized front grille, dual-lamp rectangular headlights and large-size rear combination lamps that wrap around to both sides.
Emphasis on Safety
- Large areas of glass have been incorporated through introduction of a low belt-line and a lowered dashboard, to achieve a wide range of vision.
- The use of large-size rear combination lamps that wrap well around to both sides is designed to make the Camry more visible to automobiles approaching from the rear.
- The front wheels use disc brakes and the rear wheels use leading-trailing type brakes, thus securing responsive braking performance for the Camry.
Comfortable Driving and Easy Maneuverability
- Footrests have been fitted to all versions to eliminate involuntary body posture changes during cornering, and to contribute to reducing left-foot fatigue during long-distance driving.
- The XT version of the Camry is fitted with a tilt steering wheel to enable the driver to adjust the steering wheel for maximum comfort matching his own body and posture.
- Power steering is offered as an option in the 1800 XT version, to allow lighter turn in the steering wheel.
Outstanding Performance
- The Camry is mounted with either the 12T-U type (1588cc) or the 13T-U type (1770cc) engine, both rated highly for their performance in the Celica, Corona and other models.
- The front suspension uses strut-type coil springs, and the rear uses 4-link coil springs with lateral rods. These suspension configurations guarantee both a comfortable ride and superior operating performance.
Sales targets for the Celica Camry in Japan have been set for the time being at 5,000 vehicles per month.
