Toyota Unveils New Models in 4WD Land Cruiser SeriesImprovements Also Added to Present Models

TOKYO―Toyota today announced the addition of two new hardtop models to its popular 4WD Land Cruiser series: a '60V' (5-passenger; 4-door) model and a '44V' (6-passenger; 2-door) model, The automaker also revealed new improvements that stretch across the full Land Cruiser line.

The 44V model will be placed on sale in late Septebmer, but all other changes were in effect nationwide today.

The 4WD vehicle market first began growing in response to great demand from government organizations and corporations, who valued their outstanding utility and durability. In recent years, however, a strong leisure-vehicle demand has also emerged as consumeres have found 4WD vehicles attractive for their ruggedness and utility in recreational use. Hardtop 4WD vehicles are especially popular for their all-weather versatility, and many people now purchase them as replacements for passenger cars.

The new 60V model has features that make it highly versatile, boasting of fresh styling, newly added standard and optional equipment, and functional capabilities that make it a true multi-purpose 4WD vehicle.

With the addition of the newly introduced models, the Land Cruiser series of hardtops is now comprised of two 60V models, one 44V model and two 41V (4-passenger; 2-door) models.

Other models in the Land Cruiser line have been improved, especially in the three areas of drivability, safety and available options. Here is an outline of the new models and the improvements made in existing models.

60V Model

• New External Appearance

  The front window of the 60V has been slanted lower than the 56V, and large-size windows have been used to provide an outstanding field of vision. Passenger car styling elements give the 60V its sporty appearance.

• Improved Drivability, Better Economy

  Two types of engines are available in the 60V. One is the 2F-Type (4230 cc) gasoline engine, which has aleady earned a fine reputation for its sturdy performance; the other is the newly developed 3B-Type (3431 cc) diesel engine, outstanding for its economy of operation and good response at high speeds. In addition, a long wheelbase and wide tread give the 60V models greatly improved drivability.

• Improved Comfort

  Bucket seats with superior holding characteristics are used up front. They are fully reclining seats that can be slid forward and backward a total of 160 mm, thereby guaranteeing a comfortable sitting position for the driver and the passenger.
  Optional equipment includes a full-air-mix type air conditioner, and noise inside the compartment has been greatly reduced by use of sound-proofing materials and double- Cardan type constant velocity joints.

• Wider Range of Equipment

  A 'G package' of optional equipment has been made available, making it possible to raise specifications and equipment a grade higher. The 'G package' includes a tilt steering wheel, tachometer, intermittent windshield wipers, quality fabric seats, full door trim, floor carpets, door pockets, chrome-plated bumpers (front and rear) and other equipment. Another option is a headlamp cleaner, for improved forward visibility at night on muddy roads or while driving in snow.
  Power steering is also optional in the gasoline-powered FJ60V Model, providing a sensitive steering response at low speeds and in off-road driving.
  Another option, for use in the two-wheel-drive mode, is the free-wheel hub. It gives a better fuel performance and reduces noise.

• Improved Utility

  Maximum load capacities for the 60V Model are 400 kg with five passengers, and 500 kg with two passengers. The rear luggage compartment has been made 80 mm wider, and the rear gate access 220 mm wider. A large-size rear step bumper has also been included for boarding and loading convenience.

44V Model

• Improved Load Capacity

  Ample luggage space allows a 250 kg load with six passengers, and a 500 kg load with two passengers.

• Improved Comfort

  The rear seat faces forward and seats four persons. Particular attention has been paid to improved riding comfort.

• Improved Utility

  The rear seat windows are sliding windows, thus providing outstanding air circulation and greater passenger comfort.
