Worldwide Toyota Prius Sales Top 100,000 Mark in August

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that worldwide sales of its Prius hybrid sedan topped the 100,000 mark(*1) in August.

The Prius, the world's first mass-produced gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle, debuted in Japan in December 1997. Its reputation as an advanced eco-considerate sedan has continued to grow, with sales beginning in North America in July 2000 and in Europe in September of the same year. Including Asia, the Prius is now available in more than 20 countries and territories around the globe.

The more than 100,000 Prius already sold are making a direct and substantial contribution to fuel economy and the reduction of greenhouse gases. Since the Prius is about twice as fuel efficient as a conventional gasoline-only-powered car of the same size(*2), and because each Prius on the road today is estimated to travel 6,000 to 10,000 kilometers a year, approximately 20,000 to 30,000 kiloliters less gasoline is consumed annually worldwide. This translates into a 50,000-to-70,000-ton decrease in otherwise created CO2, which is said to be a cause of global warming.

By the end of August, cumulative registrations of the Prius in Japan stood at 61,199 units, while cumulative sales outside Japan had reached 39,009 units, for a worldwide total of 100,208 vehicles.
