TOYOTA PLANS INFORMATIVE DISPLAY FOR
23RD TOKYO MOTOR SHOW

Energy Conservation Highlights Leading the Way to the "80s" Theme

TOKYO―The 23rd Tokyo Motor Show, slated to open Thursday, Nov.1 for 12 days at the International Trade Center, Harumi Pier, Tokyo, will see Toyota Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Sales Co. jointly host a gala display of 27 passenger cars and 21 commercial vehicles from the full line of Toyota products. The firm also plans to display in this major pan-industrial showcase a number of special exhibition automobiles, including:

  • The CX-80 Sedan, designed for practical urban transport of the future,
  • The Family Wagon, with high utility fitting for a new era and with extra-high functionalism, and
  • The Hi-Lux RM-4D, Toyota's 4WD multipurpose pickup truck.

In addition to these vehicles of the present and future, Toyota will present graphic explanations of its research and development efforts toward energy savings, as well as some of the solid technological results of that work―such as the Toyota turbocharged engine and the latest in automotive applications of electronics which can be found in the Toyota Technical Zone of the Passenger Car Pavilion.

Passenger Car Pavilion

The Toyota display in the Passenger Car Pavilion is comprised, first of all, of sixteen units, ranging across Toyota's full line of cars, from the top-of-the-line Century to the Starlet. Also shown here are Corona and Corolla liftback models―functional, multi-purposes cars―and sporty-type cars.

The Theme Zone, the second part of the Toyota passenger car display, features the CX-80 and the Family Wagon.

The CX-80―A car designed specifically to respond to contemporary changes in the way people view automobiles, it has a compact body construction, and is high versatile and economical. Inside, the driver sees digital meters and gauges clustered on the dashboard―within the frame of the steering wheel. The CX-80 also has a push-button automatic transmission selector system, and hinged doors for easy boarding and alighting even in tight parking spots. These and many other luxury features make this a high-quality prototype car for the coming decade.

The Family Wagon―A station wagon that is not merely a means of transport, but plays multiple roles as a leisure, business, or group-use vehicle, this Family Wagon can carry seven passengers, and features swiveling rear seats for facing either forward or backward. In addition to such luxurious touches as an audio system, television and a folding table, it offers a high roof, an automatic sun roof and other convenience and comfort features.

The Technical Zone is the third part of the Toyota passenger car display. Toyota is constantly at work in the area of research, development and applications for conserving energy and resources by improving fuel economy and reducing the weight of its automobiles. Some of the notably successful and promising results of those efforts include especially a turbocharged engine, various electronics-related equipment and automatic transmissions―all shown in the Toyota displays in this year's Motor Show.

Commercial Vehicle Pavilion

This part of the Toyota display has three "Comers."

Distribution Corner
Thirteen Toyota commercial vehicles are on display here, representing the wide variety of the Toyota line―from the Dyna to the Stout Van―that responds to the many automotive needs of the distribution industry today.
Community Corner
Toyota displays here some representative vehicles to demonstrate the many public service activities that depend upon automotive products for their capabilities―including a Land Cruiser Fire Truck, and a Coaster Bus designed especially for transportation of handicapped persons.
Leisure Comer
Four vehicles are on display here, including the Lite-Ace Wagon. These Toyota vehicles are popular in many lands for both their dependability and for the many recreational uses to which they can handily be put.

Also on display in the Commercial Vehicle Pavilion is the Hi-Lux RM-4D. A modified version of the 4WD Hi-Lux, developed to meet the greatly diversified needs of the pickup truck market, the Hi-Lux 4WD mounts the popular 18R-J engine, known for its power and durability. A bold layout places the engine transmission directly above the front axle; a double Cardan joint and 15-inch tires add to making this a true 4WD vehicle.

Other signs of the outstanding performance to be expected of this vehicle whether off-road, on sharp inclines or when running on watery surfaces include a 30-degree grade-climbing ability, a 46-degree approach angle and ground clearance of 220mm.

In addition, Toyota has on display examples of its work in the area of engine technology, showing nine of its engines in the Theme Pavilion that illustrate the past, present and future of this important automotive frontier.
