Toyota's Brand New Safety Package Debuts with
Redesigned Corolla Japan Models
Toyota City, Japan, March 30, 2015―Toyota will launch a sportier Corolla Fielder and a more modern Corolla Axio in Japan on April 1. In addition to interior and exterior styling changes and improved fuel efficiency1, the redesigned models will be the first to feature the brand new Toyota Safety Sense C package2.
The latest redesigns build upon a well-established heritage that stretches back to 1966, when the first generation Corolla was launched. When the Corolla was first developed, Tatsuo Hasegawa, the project general manager in charge of the car, told his development team to picture a car that would bring happiness and the convenience of mobility to people around the world. True to that vision, the Corolla has always been a reliable, practical, and easy-to-operate car that, over almost 50 years, has stayed in tune with the changing times. In this latest partial redesign, the Corolla will become the first model to offer the all-new Toyota Safety Sense C package2.
- Class-leading Safety Performance
As part of a multi-faceted approach to active safety, the Toyota Safety Sense C package uses both a laser radar unit and a camera to achieve high reliability and performance. The package integrates the following safety technologies
PCS uses a camera and laser radar to detect objects ahead of the vehicle. When a potential collision is detected, it prompts the driver to brake with an audio and visual alert. If the driver fails to brake in time, the system automatically applies the brakes, reducing speed by approximately 30 km/h to prevent or mitigate the collision3. The operational range of PCS covers speeds at which at least 80 percent of rear-end collisions occur (relative speeds of between approximately 10 km/h and 80 km/h).
LDA uses the camera to detect white and yellow lane markings. If the vehicle starts to deviate from the lane, LDA warns the driver with an audio and visual alert.
AHB helps ensure excellent forward visibility during nighttime driving. It uses a camera to detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the tail lights of vehicles ahead, and then automatically switches between high beams and low beams so as not to interfere with the vision of other drivers.
A special function2 has been added that alerts drivers when preceding vehicles have moved forward while waiting at a traffic signal. A drive-start control function helps prevent sudden starts if the accelerator is pressed when the gear-stick has been set erroneously. In addition, a function that automatically activates hazard lights when brakes are suddenly applied is standard on all vehicles.
- Revamped Interior and Exterior Designs
The Corolla Fielder has a sportier design, while the Corolla Axio has a more modern design. In addition, the popular W×B grade (featuring a white and black color scheme) has been added to the Corolla Fielder lineup as a special edition.
- With Toyota's signature "Under Priority" front face, the Fielder sports a large trapezoidal, lower grille and horizontal bar, accentuating the vehicle's open feel. Gilding running from the upper grille to the headlights expresses strength and openness. Overall, the front face improves aerodynamic flow, cooling performance, and pedestrian protection in the event of a collision.
- The shape of the rear combination lamps has been changed, and together with the horizontal flow lend an open and sharp look to the rear view.
- The W×B and Aerotourer grades adopt a dot pattern front lower grille, that together with LED clearance lamps4, enhances the vehicle's sense of presence. Meanwhile, the addition of sharply defined lower garnish at the rear enhances the vehicle's sporty image.
- The vehicle's lateral dimensions are emphasized by an expanded lower grille below the front bumper and gilding running from the upper grille to the headlights.
- Repositioning of the rear combination lights creates an open feel at the rear with respect to lateral flow, including the license plate garnish. Lowering the position of the reflectors, and adopting a design whereby the lower portion of the bumper flows naturally to the side of the vehicle, enhances the car's sense of stability.
- Genuine leather covers the steering wheel and shift knob for a quality, smooth grip5. Some grades offer piano black shift lever housing and shifter bezel, together with gilding around the shift lever housing, increasing the sense of luxury.
- Side air-conditioning vents have been reshaped, improving use and tactile feel. Additionally, a new LED spot lamp for the front cup holder enhances occupant comfort.
- A footrest in the pedal well is standard in all vehicles except manual transmission models, helping to enhance driver comfort during long driving sessions.
The Corolla Fielder is now available in vivid Orange Metallic, and exclusive to the W×B grade, Cool Bordeaux Glass Flake (optional). The Corolla Axio is now available in deep Vintage Brown Pearl Crystal Shine (optional).
For the interior, the Corolla Fielder W×B employs black for both the ceiling and pillars, creating a predominantly black and white interior. White seats and door trim are also offered (optional), contrasting against the black to deliver a stylish interior space. The Corolla Axio Hybrid G and 1.5G grades employ a new flaxen color, expressing refinement.
- Enhanced Environmental Performance
Drawing on technology honed through the development of hybrid vehicles, the newly developed 1.5-liter 2NR-FKE engine in the two-wheel drive and CVT models achieves fuel efficiency of 23.4km/L (23.0km/L for the Corolla Fielder) and similarly high thermal efficiency. In addition to adopting the Atkinson cycle used in hybrid vehicles, the new partially redesigned Corolla models also adopt VVT-iE6, achieving a new level of fuel efficiency and dynamic performance. Furthermore, the Stop & Start System idling-stop function is standard on all grades. Both non-hybrid models also meet the Japanese government's 2020 fuel economy standards as specified under the Act on the Rational Use of Energy, and achieve emissions that are at least 75 percent lower than the 2005 standards under the Japanese government's Approval System for Low-emission Vehicles. As a result the Corolla Fielder and Corolla Axio are also eligible for the Japanese government's subsidies and tax incentives for eco-cars7.
The efficiency of the hybrid models has been further enhanced, resulting in a fuel efficiency of 33.8km/L. The hybrid models exceed the Japanese government's 2020 fuel economy standards by at least 20 percent, and achieve emissions that are at least 75 percent lower than the 2005 standards set under the Japanese government's Approval System for Low-emission Vehicles. As a result, all Corolla Fielder and Axio hybrid models are also eligible for the Japanese government's subsidies and tax incentives for eco-cars7.
Welcab versions (specially equipped vehicles with factory-installed features for the disabled and elderly) offer the same improvements as the base models.
